In the absence of any overt disease found in the initial health surveillance the author questions the use of the ACGIH, TLVs and BEIs, which were exceeded dramatically, for cobalt oxide workers. However, the finding of cardiovascular disease, in particular, the diagnosis of cardiomyopathy, adds to the current scientific puzzle of multiple causation of occupational disease. Further specialized tests currently underway may indicate more subtle effects of exposure.
