In recent years, the seemingly dissimilar applications of polymers in pharmaceutical, medical and cosmetic areas have drawn closer together, due partly to similar materials requirements and partly to similar chemistry in the end uses. This paper indicates how similar polymers can be used in these diverse fields, and how the basic technology is analogous in each case. Examples include poly(saccharides), poly-(peptides), methacrylate derivatives and poly(silicones).

MicrospongeR Delivery Systems (MDS): A Topical Delivery System with Multiple Mechanism for Triggering the Release of Actives

Recently the controlled release of topically active agents has been a subject of increasing interest. The use of an MDS (MicrospongeR Delivery System) for the controlled administration of an active agent provides benefits that range from more efficient use of the active agent to a less irritating formulation. The average MDS is an active agent loaded in a macroporous bead with an average particle size of 25 um. The use of an MDS confers to the formulation a sustained or controlled release and the capacity to either initiate or modify the release rate when exposed to some change in the external environment. The external stimuli can be invoked by the user in either an active or passive manner, i.e., rubbing, temperature, pH, etc. Thus the development of triggered-release MDS formulations results in “intelligent” responsive systems.

A review covers the application of porous microspheres in cosmetics and skin care applications.The preparation and incorporation of an active agent into these porous microspheres are also described.Porous microspheres are highly cross-linked and highly porous copolymers, which have found extensive use in the skin care arena.The nature of the polymer allows the loading of a wide range of chem. entities with subsequent release dependent on the vehicle into which the porous microspheres has been dispersed.This polymer is widely used in reducing irritation without decreasing efficacy when used appropriately.
