May act as a candidate coinhibitory factor for NR0B2 that can be directly linked to transcription inhibitory mechanisms.

Increased atherogenicity in mood disorders: a systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression

BACKGROUNDMajor depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD) often coexist with metabolic syndrome. Both are linked to increased atherogenicity and a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases. Nevertheless, a comprehensive analysis of key atherogenic biomarkers in MDD/BD is still lacking.OBJECTIVESThis meta-analysis evaluates the relationship between atherogenic indices and MDD/BD, while identifying the most effective atherogenic biomarker.METHODSThis study adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. We searched electronic databases, including PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science, for articles published up to August 1, 2024.RESULTSWe included 85 eligible studies (14 on BD and 71 on MDD), covering 70,856 participants: 18,738 patients and 52,118 healthy controls. MDD/BD patients showed significant increases (p < 0.001) in the Castelli Risk Index 2 (CRI2), Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP), and (triglyceride or TG + low-density lipoprotein + very low-density lipoprotein)/(high-density lipoprotein cholesterol or HDL + Apolipoprotein A or ApoA) ratio, but not CRI1 and ApoB/ApoA ratio. Significant lower HDL and lecithin: cholesterol acyltransferase activity, and higher TG levels were observed in MDD/BD patients compared with controls. There were no significant differences between MDD and BD patients. Most included studies lacked the most essential information on the inclusion and exclusion of important confounders.CONCLUSIONSAIP is the most effective atherogenicity index for mood disorders. Regular lipid profiling and metabolic syndrome screening are crucial in MDD/BD. Early intervention with lipid-lowering therapies is recommended to prevent the worsening of atherogenicity and disease progression.

Association between PM2.5 constituents and cardiometabolic risk factors: Exploring individual and combined effects, and mediating inflammation

BACKGROUNDThe individual and combined effects of PM_2.5 constituents on cardiometabolic risk factors are sparsely investigated. Besides, the key cardiometabolic risk factor that PM_2.5 constituents targeted and the biological mechanisms remain unclear.METHODA multistage, stratified cluster sampling survey was conducted in two typically air-polluted Chinese cities. The PM_2.5 and its constituents including sulfate, nitrate, ammonium, organic matter, and black carbon were predicted using a machine learning model. Twenty biomarkers in three category were simultaneously adopted as cardiometabolic risk factors. We explored the individual and mixture association of long-term PM_2.5 constituents with these markers using generalized additive model and quantile-based g-computation, respectively. To minimize potential confounding effects, we accounted for covariates including demographic, lifestyle, meteorological, temporal trends, and disease-related information. We further used ROC curve and mediation analysis to identify the key subclinical indicators and explore whether inflammatory mediators mediate such association, respectively.RESULTPM_2.5 constituents was positively correlated with HOMA-B, TC, TG, LDL-C and LCI, and negatively correlated with PP and RC. Further, PM_2.5 constituent mixture was positive associated with DBP, MAP, HbA1c, HOMA-B, AC, CRI-1 and CRI-2, and negative associated with PP and HDL-C. The ROC analysis further reveals that multiple cardiometabolic risk factors can collectively discriminate exposure to PM_2.5 constituents (AUC>0.9), among which PP and CRI-2 as individual indicators exhibit better identifiable performance for nitrate and ammonium (AUC>0.75). We also found that multiple blood lipid indicators may be affected by PM_2.5 and its constituents, possibly mediated through complement C3 or hsCRP.CONCLUSIONOur study suggested associations of individual and combined PM_2.5 constituents exposure with cardiometabolic risk factors. PP and CRI-2 were the targeted markers of long-term exposure to nitrate and ammonium. Inflammation may serve as a mediating factor between PM_2.5 constituents and dyslipidemia, which enhance current understanding of potential pathways for PM_2.5-induced preclinical cardiovascular responses.

Association of quality and quantity of macronutrients intake with obesity, new anthropometric indices, lipid accumulation, and blood lipid risk index in Tehranian women

AbstractBackgroundThis study examines the association between micronutrient intake, anthropometric indices, lipid accumulation, and blood lipid risk index among Tehranian women.MethodsA cross‐sectional study was conducted on 556 Tehranian women. Dietary intake was measured using a Food Frequency Questionnaire. Biochemical assessment and anthropometric indices were measured, and demographic information and physical activity were collected.ResultsParticipants with the highest intake of carbohydrates were more prone to obesity. Conversely, those in the top tertile for protein intake had a lower likelihood of obesity and higher levels of lipid accumulation product (LAP). The highest fat consumers had a 63% decreased chance of having a high Castelli's Risk Index 1 (CRI‐1). A higher glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) were linked to an increased probability of a high atherogenic coefficient (AC). Women in the top tertile of GL were significantly more likely to be obese and had lower odds for high LAP. Participants in the top tertile of aromatic amino acids/branched chain amino acids (AAA/BCAA) had significantly lower chances of high CRI‐1 and a high atherogenic index of plasma (AIP). Those in the highest tertile of monounsaturated fatty acids/polyunsaturated fatty acids (MUFA/PUFA) had lower odds of obesity and high AIP.ConclusionsThe amount of carbohydrate (g) and protein intake (%), dietary GL, and the ratio of MUFA to PUFA were associated with obesity. The amount of fat intake (g) and AAA/BCAA indices were associated with CRI‐1. LAP decreased with an increase in GL. AC increased with an increase in GI and GL. AAA/BCAA and MUFA/PUFA were associated with AIP.
