Introduction

A gastrointestinal infection attributed to the bacteria campylobacter. It is usually contracted by consuming raw or undercooked poultry or consuming a food that has been in contact with raw poultry. It is characterized by abdominal pain, fever, and diarrhea and usually resolves in two to five days.

In accordance with the relevant provisions of bioequivalence tests, erythromycin ethylsuccinate granules (trade name: Eryped ®, specification: 400 mg/5 mL) manufactured by ARBOR PHARMACEUTICALS LLC was selected as the reference preparation, and the test preparation erythromycin ethylsuccinate granules (trade name: Lijunsha, specification: 0.1 g/bag) produced by Xi'an Lijun Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. was subjected to a human bioequivalence test on fasting administration to compare whether the absorption rate and degree of the drug in the test preparation were within an acceptable range with those of the reference preparation, and to compare the bioequivalence of the two preparations under fasting administration conditions.

Campylobacter jejuni hepatitis in a horse: case report and literature review

Campylobacter spp. can cause gastroenteritis, hepatitis, bacteremia, and abortions in domestic animals and humans. Some Campylobacter spp. are zoonotic. To our knowledge, hepatitis caused by Campylobacter jejuni has not been reported in horses. Here we present a case of acute necrosuppurative hepatitis caused by C. jejuni infection in a 3-y-old gelding, and we review the literature on C. jejuni infections in various animal species. The horse had a one-week history of weight loss and weakness before becoming recumbent and dying. Grossly, the liver had rounded edges and was mottled. There were ecchymoses on the gastric serosa, and a large amount of mucoid, pale, green-to-yellow content adhered to the mucosa of the small and large intestines. Microscopically, random areas in the liver were necrotic and infiltrated by large numbers of neutrophils, and fewer lymphocytes and plasma cells. Other changes in the liver included neutrophilic cholangitis with bile duct hyperplasia in portal areas, canalicular cholestasis, and mild portal fibrosis. The lamina propria, and occasionally the submucosa, of the small intestine and colon was infiltrated by large numbers of lymphocytes and plasma cells, and there was multifocal crypt necrosis. C. jejuni was recovered in pure culture from the liver.

Neutrophil recruitment during intestinal inflammation primes Salmonella elimination by commensal E. coli in a context-dependent manner

Foodborne bacterial diarrhea involves complex pathogen-microbiota-host interactions. Pathogen-displacing probiotics are increasingly popular, but heterogeneous patient outcomes highlighted the need to understand individualized host-probiotic activity. Using the mouse gut commensal Escherichia coli 8178 and the human probiotic E. coli Nissle 1917, we found that the degree of protection against the enteric pathogen Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Tm) varies across mice with distinct gut microbiotas. Pathogen clearance is linked to enteropathy severity and subsequent recruitment of intraluminal neutrophils, which differs in a microbiota-dependent manner. By combining mouse knockout and antibody-mediated depletion models with bacterial genetics, we show that neutrophils and host-derived reactive oxygen species directly influence E. coli-mediated S. Tm displacement by potentiating siderophore-bound toxin killing. Our work demonstrates how host immune factors shape pathogen-displacing probiotic efficiency while also revealing an unconventional antagonistic interaction where a gut commensal and the host synergize to displace an enteric pathogen.

A population-based study of the appearances of enteric Campylobacter and non-typhoidal Salmonella infections on computed tomography

BACKGROUNDSwift identification and diagnosis of gastrointestinal infections are crucial for prompt treatment, prevention of complications, and reduction of the risk of hospital transmission. The radiological appearance on computed tomography could potentially provide important clues to the etiology of gastrointestinal infections. We aimed to describe features based on computed tomography of patients diagnosed with Campylobacter, Salmonella or Shigella infections in South Sweden.METHODSThis was a retrospective observational population-based cohort study conducted between 2019 and 2022 in Skåne, southern Sweden, a region populated by 1.4 million people. Using data from the Department of Clinical Microbiology combined with data from the Department of Radiology, we identified all patients who underwent computed tomography of the abdomen CTA two days before and up to seven days after sampling due to the suspicion of Campylobacter, Salmonella or Shigella during the study period.RESULTSA total of 215 CTAs scans performed on 213 patients during the study period were included in the study. The median age of included patients was 45 years (range 11-86 years), and 54% (114/213) of the patients were women. Of the 215 CTAs, 80% (n = 172) had been performed due to Campylobacter and 20% (n = 43) due to Salmonella enteritis. CTA was not performed for any individual diagnosed with Shigella during the study period. There were no statistically significant differences in the radiological presentation of Campylobacter and Salmonella infections.CONCLUSIONThe most common location of Campylobacter and Salmonella infections was the cecum, followed by the ascending colon. Enteric wall edema, contrast loading of the affected mucosa, and enteric fat stranding are typical features of both infections. The CTA characteristics of Campylobacter and Salmonella are similar, and cannot be used to reliably differentiate between different infectious etiologies.
