Tau Brain Imaging in Typical and Atypical Alzheimer's Disease (AD)

Recently revised Alzheimer Disease (AD) diagnostic1described nonamnestic presentations: 1/ language presentation (logopenic progressive aphasia) 2/ visuospatial presentation (posterior cortical atrophy or PCA) and 3/ executive dysfunction. AD pathological changes may precede the clinical diagnosis of dementia of AD type for a while2. Biomarkers have been developed: biomarkers of brain amyloid-beta (Aß) (CerebroSpinal Fluid CSF concentration ßamyloid, molecular imaging with amyloid targeted PET ligands), biomarkers of neural degeneration (MRI hippocampal volume, regional metabolism as assessed by PET with [18F]-FDG) and may be used to made early detection of the neuropathology associated with AD Even if CSF biomarkers (tau, p-tau and β amyloïd are interesting to improve diagnosis of AD, they cannot provide topographic information. PET tau imaging seems to be promise to evaluate quantitative and spatial assessment of tau lesions both in AD and fronto-temporal lobar dementia.
The hypothesis of the research is that it exists a different regional pattern of tracer retention across brain regions according to clinical symptoms : temporal for logopenic aphasia and occipital for posterior cortical atrophy.

ABSTRACTMarasmius crinis-equi , known as the horse hair fungus, is a litter-decomposing fungus that is opportunistically pathogenic on various plants. We sequenced the genome of M. crinis-equi strain GH-76 isolated from thread blight disease-infected cacao leaves in Ghana. The genome is 72.8 Mbp in size and 91.2% complete via benchmarking universal single-copy orthologs (BUSCO).

Increased Incidence of Asteroid Hyalosis in Bilaterial Macular Telangiectasia Type II Patients

Purpose:Investigate the relationship between Bilateral Macular Telangiectasia Type II (MacTel) and Asteroid Hyalosis (AH) and identify the factors that influence this correlation.Methods:A retrospective review utilizing the Retina Consultants of Alabama database from January 2016 to February 28, 2024 was conducted. The charts of 321 patients with retinal telangiectasias were assessed, and 143 were excluded. They were further partitioned into those with AH+MacTel (n=16) versus MacTel only (n=162). The incidence was determined and compared to population-based AH studies with similar patient demographics. Demographic and ocular data were collected and compared between the AH+MacTel and MacTel only groups.Results:AH was more prevalent in our MacTel cohort (9.88%) compared to Beaver Dam (1.20%, p<.001), Blue Mountains (1.01%, p<0.001), UCLA Autopsy (1.96%, p<.001), and Gutenberg Health studies (0.477%, p<0.001). An inverse link was found between AH+MacTel patients and posterior vitreous detachments (p<0.045 univariate, p<0.025 multivariate). AH+MacTel patients presented fewer ocular conditions (1.79±1.12) than MacTel only patients (2.31±1.11) and significantly lower OCT Central Subfield Thickness (224±43.0 μm) versus MacTel alone (249±49.6 μm; unadjusted mean difference: -25 μm, 95% CI: -45.3 to -4.76).Conclusion:There was a statistically significantly higher prevalence of patients with AH who also had a diagnosis of MacTel compared to the general population.

Meniere's disease: Structural considerations in early cochlea hydrops

AbstractObjectiveStructural features of the human cochlea may control early lesion formation in endolymphatic hydrops. This process may hinge on three structural features: the flattened spiral shape of the human cochlea, the toroidal configuration of the distended cochlea duct, and the distensibility characteristics of Reissner's membrane. An analytical method is presented to assess the variation in hydropic distention that may occur in the several turns of the cochlea due to these structural features.MethodsA normal human cochlea is used to illustrate the method of analysis. Structural dimensions were taken from a mid‐modiolar section. Reissner's membrane was projected to assume a spiral toroid shape as it distends. Peak membrane stress proclivities in each cochlea turn were calculated analytically. Membrane strain was assessed from a collagen model of Reissner's membrane. Sagittal membrane displacements were quantified geometrically.ResultsStress levels in Reissner's membrane were projected to be the lowest in the lower basal turn and to increase progressively to a peak value in the apex. Strain in Reissner's membrane in the apical turn was projected to be substantially higher than in the lower turns. Sagittal displacement of Reissner's membrane was projected to be most pronounced in the apical turn in all the stages of early cochlea hydrops.ConclusionStructural features appear to underlie a differential susceptibility to hydrops in the human cochlea. The flattened spiral shape of the human cochlea coupled with the anticlastic configuration and the distensile characteristics of Reissner's membrane are projected to result in distinct histological stages as hydropic disease in the cochlea progresses.
