Introduction

Isolated congenital anonychia is characterized by nail abnormalities ranging from onychodystrophy (dystrophic nails) to anonychia (absence of nails). Onychodystrophy-anonychia has been described in at least four generations of a family with male-to-male transmission, suggesting autosomal dominant transmission. Anonychia has been described in approximately less than 20 cases; it is likely to be transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait. Total anonychia congenita, in which all the fingernails and toenails are absent, may have an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern.

BECOME Study: Comparative Efficacy of Bovine and Marine Collagen Versus Placebo on Skin, Hair, Nails and Whole Body Health Markers

Kinematic changes in dairy cows with induced, unilateral forelimb lameness during straight line walk

Early detection of lameness in dairy herds is essential to enable timely treatment of affected animals, thereby avoiding unnecessary costs and animal suffering. Since claw diseases most commonly affect the hind claws, specific kinematic changes in cows with forelimb lameness have not been investigated. However, in-depth knowledge on movement pattern alterations occurring during lameness of varying sources is essential to develop efficient lameness detection tools. In this study, 27 gait analysis trials consisting of > 2 000 strides were collected from 12 clinically sound dairy cows. The cows were equipped with nine body-mounted inertial measurement units (IMUs) and contributed with one baseline trial and one or two lameness trials each. A lameness induction method causing increased claw pressure was used to introduce mild, reversible, unilateral forelimb lameness. From the IMU data, 31 limb-and upper body movement parameters, mainly focusing on motion symmetry, were computed for each stride. Baseline and lameness data were compared in linear mixed models, where between-cow variability was accounted for. Twenty-two movement parameters differed between the two conditions (P ≤ 0.05). Forelimb lameness caused a more pace-like walk; the relative time between hoof-on of both hindlimbs and their respective ipsilateral forelimb decreased by 0.022 and 0.036 (ratio of stride duration), while the relative time between hoof-on of the hindlimb contralateral to the lame forelimb, and the lame forelimb increased by 0.050. The maximum protraction angle of the lame forelimb increased by 1.5°, while the protraction angle of the non-lame forelimb, and the retraction angle of the lame forelimb, decreased by 1.7° and 3.0°. All hindlimb protraction and retraction angles, except the protraction angle of the hindlimb contralateral to the lame forelimb, decreased by 1.2°-1.4°. Following signal decomposition of upper body vertical motion, the largest changes were detected for the head and neck; there were notable increases (0.13 and 0.11) of their first harmonic (asymmetric component) amplitudes, and decreases (0.10 and 0.050) of their second harmonic (symmetric component) amplitudes (relative to the range of motion). Changes in the within-stride differences in the withers' position during limb spread and midstance (respectively) were also detected. The vertical range of motion per stride increased for the head, neck, and back, but decreased for the pelvis. Although the investigated parameters hence show promise as lameness indicators, the movement changes occurring with the induced fore claw pain should be confirmed in clinical lameness cases, to ensure usability of the described pattern for early, automated forelimb lameness detection.

Welfare of dairy cows in open-sided loose housing systems under temperate conditions—A review of potential challenges

Over recent decades, more open housing systems with partially uncovered functional barn areas have become increasingly common in both organic and conventional dairy farming in temperate climates. These open housings can enhance cow welfare by improving air quality, providing access to varying stimuli, including rain and sunlight, and allowing more space for social retreat. However, open housings may also expose cows to potential challenges from extreme weather, even in temperate climates. This review synthesizes English-language scientific literature from 2000 to 2023 on animal welfare challenges under less weather-protected housing conditions and evaluates various mitigation measures. A total of 83 relevant articles were identified via a search in the Web of Science and supplementary backward search, with an additional 54 articles included from previous and extended in-depth searches. In hot summer conditions, sun-exposed lying and feeding areas can increase heat stress and pose further welfare risks, including reduced lying times, lower feed intake, and more competition for drinkers. Shade, especially in high-use areas, is the most cost-effective solution, whereas additional measures, such as sprinklers or ventilation, use of heat-conducting bedding materials, increased number of drinkers, and adjusted feeding schedules to cooler times of the day, also support the cows in thermoregulation. In winter conditions, open housing systems pose fewer risks to cow thermal comfort, provided that animals have access to dry, wind-protected areas. However, in regions with more frequent rainfall, covered and dry lying areas help to prevent reduced lying times and claw diseases, udder soiling and infections. Potential risks from precipitation or cold temperatures in the walking and feeding area have been less studied yet. However, low temperatures combined with wind and precipitation can create icy floors, posing slip and injury risks, and precipitation penetrating roughage on the feed bunk might reduce feed quality and intake. However, future research on the extent of these risks and effects of possible mitigation measures would be relevant for the practical application.

Claw diseases are the dominant cause of lameness in dairy cows and a risk factor for mastitis

Lameness and mastitis are two of the most economically important issues for the dairy industry. This study aimed to obtain a clearer analysis of the link between mastitis and lameness in dairy cows using the Mastitis Score and detecting the pathogens that predominate in dairy cows' milk samples with claw diseases. During routine claw trimming, milk samples were collected from dairy cows in two Slovak dairy farms. Out of 558 cows presented for claw trimming, 144 cows (25.8%) exhibited lameness from claw diseases. The most prevalent disease in our study was digital dermatitis (43.1%), followed by toe necrosis (41.7%), and Rusterholz ulcer (15.3%). Udder inflammation in clinical form was diagnosed based on clinical examination of individual udder quarters, and sensory evaluation of milk from each quarter and in the subclinical form by the CMT. Mastitis was detected in 80 cows with claw diseases, clinical mastitis in 14 cows (17.5%), and subclinical mastitis in 66 cows (82.5%). On both farms, Mastitis Scores were significantly higher in dairy cows affected by claw diseases than in the non-lame ones. In mastitic cows affected by claw diseases, environmental pathogens dominated the infected milk samples. Our findings showed that cows with claw disease were more likely to have mastitis.
