Introduction

A hamartoma characterized by localized malformation of one or more of the components of the dermis; presenting as clustered, slightly raised, pea-sized lesions distributed over the abdomen, back, buttocks, arms, or thighs. It may be an isolated lesion or a component of one of a number of inherited disorders, such as tuberous sclerosis.

Effects of Microfracture With/Without Collagen Augmentation in Patients Undergoing High Tibial Osteotomy: A Randomized, Controlled, Double-Blind Trial

The quality of cartilage regeneration after marrow stimulation is well documented to be unpredictable, because they do not regenerate consistent amount of cartilage. To overcome the shortcomings of the microfracture technique, various augmentation techniques using synthetic collagen matrix, scaffolds or plug devices have been developed. However, their efficacy remains unclear. The purpose of this prospective randomized controlled study is to evaluate whether the microfracture in combination with collagen gel augmentation could improve the quality of cartilage regeneration in patients undergoing medial open wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO) for the treatment of medial unicompartmental knee osteoarthritis (OA).

Papular elastorrhexis: recognizing an uncommon entity

Papular elastorrhexis presents as asymptomatic, multiple, discrete, nonfollicular, skin-coloured papules of size ranging from 1 to 5 mm with no tendency to coaslesce. The aetiology of papular elastorrhexis remains largely unclear. It is a benign, treatment-resistant disease with only cosmetic implications and affected patients must be counselled regarding the same. We report the case of a 21-year-old woman with papular elastorrhexis. It should be differentiated from naevus anelasticus, papular acne scars, eruptive collagenoma, disseminated lenticular dermatofibrosis, anetoderma, pseudoxanthoma elasticum and mid-dermal elastolysis. Recognition of this entity is important for patient counselling regarding the benign nature of disease with cosmetic implications.

Asymptomatic CD34⁺ plaque on the scalp of a child

AbstractFibroblastic connective tissue nevus (FCTN) is a rare, benign dermal mesenchymal lesion of fibroblastic and myofibroblastic lineage. We report a case of a 2‐year‐old male who presented with an 18‐month history of an erythematous, asymptomatic, unchanging dermal plaque on the right medial frontal scalp. A punch biopsy showed a disorderly, bland, dermal fibroblastic spindle cell proliferation extending to the superficial subcutis. It stained positive for CD34, and concern for dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans was raised. However, FISH was negative for PDGFB rearrangement, and the constellation of findings was most consistent with FCTN. This case underscores the importance of distinguishing CD34+ mesenchymal tumors for both dermatologists and dermatopathologists. As these represent a rather diverse group of lesions with different biological behaviors, a knowledge of the differential diagnosis of these entities is critical for proper patient management.

Giant cell collagenoma: Report of a rare tumor and review of literature

ABSTRACTGiant cell collagenoma (GCC) is a rare benign dermal fibrous tumor. Although it has many clinicopathological differential diagnoses, it is often confused with cutaneous sclerotic fibroma/storiform collagenoma (SF/SC) and dermatofibroma. The following characteristic features point to GCC’s diagnosis over the latter: the presence of peculiar multinucleated giant cells, and vimentin positivity of both single and multinucleated giant cells on immunohistochemistry. Most of the reported cases have mentioned that GCC is a variant of SF/SC. We report a rare case of GCC presenting as a slow-growing solitary firm nodule over the right ankle. To the best of our knowledge, only less than ten cases have been reported, including the index case. We have also reviewed the clinicopathological features of those cases and discussed the approach to the diagnosis.
