ADDISON, Ill., March 13, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- The Journal of Advanced Nursing has recently published a quality improvement project titled `Shedding new light for nurses: Enhancing PI prevention across skin tones with SEM assessment technology'. The project reveals implementation of SEM assessment technology enabled equitable pressure injury prevention for all population types and resulted in a 100% reduction in pressure injuries in a Critical Care Unit for 12 consecutive weeks. As mentioned within the publication "Reported hospital acquired pressure injury incidence rates are much higher in special care settings, including intensive/critical care, medical/surgical care and in individual population groups, including dark skin patients and veterans with spinal cord injuries." Led by Dr. Cynthia Osborne Chambers, the clinical team conducted an extensive analysis of data collected from a diverse cohort of critical care unit patients over a period of twelve weeks. Initial focus was on pressure injury prevention strategies using current standard of care. Then the Provizio® SEM Scanner was introduced for an additional twelve-week period to determine the impact of this objective, skin tone agnostic device. The findings highlight disparity in pressure injury incidence rate amongst dark tone skin patients compared to light skin tone patients. This disparity points to potential systemic issues that warrant an equitable and objective pressure injury prevention solution to be adopted as an adjunct to the current standard of care. The results of this project showed a 100% reduction in pressure injuries for all patients over the twelve-week period using the Provizio SEM Scanner as an adjunct to current standard of care for all patients, regardless of the patient's skin tone. The study assessed the sensitivity, specificity, and usability of PressureSafe against the standard of care in the detection of early-stage pressure injuries Stage 1 / suspected deep tissue injuries before skin breakage IR-MED reports positive efficacy data for its PressureSafe device. (Credit: Nappy on Unsplash) IR-MED, a developer of a spectrographic analysis technology platform, said that its PressureSafe device has shown 92% efficacy in early, non-invasive, skin colour agnostic detection of pressure injuries. PressureSafe is a non-invasive handheld optical monitoring device. It leverages infrared optical spectroscopy and an artificial intelligence (AI)-based algorithm to detect early-stage pressure injuries for all skin tones. The single arm, bi-centre study of the device was conducted at two medical centres owned by Clalit, a health maintenance organisation. The 14-day efficacy portion of the study was intended to assess the sensitivity, specificity, and usability of PressureSafe. It was compared against the standard of care in the detection of early-stage pressure injuries Stage 1 / suspected deep tissue injuries (sDTI) before skin breakage. IR-MED assessed 38 patients at high risk of pressure injury development. On 154 body sites, 924 scans were performed in total. The highly favourable proof of efficacy data showed that PressureSafe was able to identify Stage 1 / sDTI pressure injuries with 92% sensitivity and 88% specificity. The study also assessed device calibration and validation in addition to safety. A total of 1,493 scans yielded no safety signals, out of the 66 patients whose data was acquired for safety study. Additionally, the rate of incidence of pressure injuries diminished by 50% during the study period. The medical device firm concluded that PressureSafe is a useful, effective, and safe decision support device for the early diagnosis of pressure injuries based on these results. The DOSED Clinical Study Will Evaluate a Novel Delivery Device in Subacute and Chronic Spinal Cord Injury Patients CARLSBAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Lineage Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (NYSE American and TASE: LCTX), a clinical-stage biotechnology company developing allogeneic cell therapies for unmet medical needs, announced today the clearance, by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), of its Investigational New Drug amendment (INDa) for OPC1, an investigational allogeneic oligodendrocyte progenitor cell transplant for the treatment of spinal cord injury (SCI). Pursuant to the INDa, Lineage has initiated activities to open its first clinical site in the DOSED (Delivery of Oligodendrocyte Progenitor Cells for Spinal Cord Injury: Evaluation of a Novel Device) study to evaluate the safety and utility of a novel spinal cord delivery device in subacute and chronic SCI patients. About the DOSED Clinical Study The Delivery of Oligodendrocyte Progenitor Cells for Spinal Cord Injury: Evaluation of a Novel Device (DOSED) clinical study is an open label, multi-center, device safety study, in approximately 3-5 subacute and 3-5 stable chronic subjects with complete (ASIA Impairment Scale A) or incomplete (ASIA Impairment Scale B), traumatic, focal SCI affecting either cervical (C4-C7) or thoracic (T1-T10) vertebrae. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the safety of a novel spinal cord delivery device to administer OPC1 to the spinal parenchyma. The primary endpoint is safety, as measured by the frequency and severity of adverse events (AEs) through 30 days following OPC1 injection that are related to the injection procedure. Secondary endpoints are safety and tolerability, as measured by the frequency and severity of AEs, including AEs of special interest, through 90 days following OPC1 injection, that are related to OPC1 and/or the concomitant short-term immunosuppression. Safety parameters will be evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data evaluating evidence of deterioration or changes in the following: intramedullary hemorrhage, cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) leak, epidural abscess, infection; evidence of an expanding cyst or mass at the injection site or elsewhere in the central nervous system (CNS); evidence of inflammatory lesion(s) at injection site or elsewhere in CNS and evidence of CSF flow obstruction. Exploratory endpoints include: (1) potential improvements in neurological impairment, function, and pain, evaluated by changes from baseline on the following endpoints: changes in neurological function as measured by sensory and motor scores and motor level on International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI) examinations; changes in post-injection pain, defined as a worsening of pain or neuropathic pain of greater than 7 days duration from baseline levels, as assessed by the International Spinal Cord Injury Pain Basic Data Set or occurrence of allodynia; (2) changes from baseline at 30, 90 and 365 days post-OPC1 injection in: ISNCSCI, SCIM, International Spinal Cord Injury Pain Questionnaire; and (3) patient and clinician impressions of changes in quality of life as reported by changes from baseline at 30, 90, and 365 days post-OPC1 injection. About OPC1 OPC1 is an oligodendrocyte progenitor cell (OPC) transplant therapy designed to provide clinically meaningful improvements to motor recovery in individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI).
