The USP (1975) gas chromatog. procedure for the determination of phenol [108-95-2] in injectable products was extended and validated as a method for the determination of PhOH in a wide variety of biol. products, such as, vaccines, tuberculin purified protein derivative, antivenins, and aqueous glycerinated and alum precipitated allergenic extractsThe average recovery of PhOH at 0.3-0.5% PhOH level was 99.6%.The average precision was measured as a relative standard deviation of 0.43%.Glycerin contained in glycerinated allergenic extracts and tuberculin purified protein derivative did not interfere with quantitation.Precipitate produced upon the addition of internal standard solution (PhCH2OH in 100% MeOH) to horse serum-derived antitoxins, antivenins and antirabies serum was eliminated by the use of 5% (or 0%) MeOH in H2O as the diluent in the internal standard solution
