The important constituents of rosemary herb extract are carnosic acid (CarA), carnosol (Car) and rosmanol (Ros), which are burdensome to the human body when consumed in excessive amounts. Using a computer-assisted method, we prepared 3B10-antibody with both broad-spectrum and high affinity for CarA, Car and Ros with median inhibitory concentration of 0.41 ng/mL, 0.45 ng/mL, and 0.53 ng/mL, respectively. Subsequently, a quantitative lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) was developed to identify CarA, Car and Ros in ham sausage and dairy within 30 min, and the respectively calculated limit of detection values of 0.044 μg/kg, 0.148 μg/kg and 0.169 μg/kg in sample, which could meet maximum additive limits. The quantitative results of LFIA method in positive samples were consistent with that of the instrumental method.These results also show that the high recognition performance and reliability of the LFIA strips validate the field test method.

Clinical implementation of RTT-only CBCT-guided online adaptive focal radiotherapy for bladder cancer

Purpose:

The study assesses the clinical implementation of radiation therapist (RTT)-only Conebeam CT (CBCT)-guided online adaptive focal radiotherapy (oART) for bladder cancer, by describing the training program, analyzing the workflow and monitoring patient experience.

Materials and methods:

Bladder cancer patients underwent treatment (20 sessions) on a ring-based linac (Ethos, Varian, a Siemens Healthineers Company, USA). Commencing April 2021, 14 patients were treated by RTTs supervised by the Radiation Oncologist (RO) and Medical Physics Expert (MPE) in a multidisciplinary workflow. From March 2022, 14 patients were treated solely by RTTs. RTT training included target delineation lessons and practicing oART in a simulation environment. We analyzed the efficiency of the RTT-only workflow regarding session time, adjustments by RTTs, attendance of the RO and MPE at the linac, and qualitative assessment of gross tumor volume (GTV) delineation. Patient experience was monitored through questionnaires.

Results:

A training program resulted in a skilled team of RTTs, ROs and MPEs.The RTT-only workflow demonstrated shorter session times compared to the multidisciplinary approach. Among 14 patients treated using the RTT-only workflow, RTTs adjusted 99% of bladder volumes and 44% of GTV. 79% of the sessions proceeded without MPEs and ROs. All GTV delineations were RO-approved, thus considered clinically acceptable, and 87% required minor or no adjustments. Patient satisfaction was reported in 18 of 21 cases.

Conclusions:

The RTT-only oART workflow for bladder cancer, complemented by a training program and on-call support from ROs and MPEs, demonstrated success. Patient experience is positive. It is currently introduced as standard in our clinic.

Peritoneal recurrence in gastric cancer after curative gastrectomy: risk factors and predictive score model

BACKGROUND:

Peritoneal recurrence (PR) remains the most common pattern of relapse in gastric cancer (GC), even after curative resection. Given its dismal prognosis, the identification of risk factors for PR is essential for developing new treatment modalities and selecting a more appropriate subgroup of patients. This study aimed to evaluate the risk factors and survival outcomes of patients with GC who had PR and to develop a risk score to predict PR.

METHODS:

All patients with GC who underwent curative gastrectomy were included. For analysis, patients were divided into no recurrence (NR), recurrence in other sites (ROS), and PR. Risk factors for PR were analyzed to build a risk score.

RESULTS:

Among 622 patients with GC, 460 (74.0%) had NR, 98 (15.7%) had ROS, and 64 (10.3%) had PR. Female patients, linitis on computed tomography, depth of tumor invasion, and diffuse/mixed type were associated with PR. Patients with PR had worse overall survival than those with ROS (22.0 vs 29.8 months, respectively; P = .008). The median survival estimates after recurrence were 5.0 months in the PR group and 9.9 months in the ROS group (P < .001). The scoring system developed with 8 variables had an accuracy of 81% in predicting PR. Accordingly, 385 patients (61.9%) were classified as low risk, and 237 patients (38.1%) were classified as high risk. Among the 64 patients with PR, 53 (82.8%) were correctly classified as high risk (P < .001).

CONCLUSION:

Patients with PR had distinct clinicopathologic characteristics and extremely restricted survival compared with patients with recurrence in other sites. The risk-scoring model was able to identify patients at higher risk of PR.
