Actinomycete culture LL-D37187 has been found to produce the new polyether antibiotic martinomycin. Taxonomic studies, including morphological, physiological, and cell wall chemistry analyses, revealed that culture LL-D37187 is a novel streptomycete species, and the proposed name is Streptomyces salvialis. Martinomycin exhibits activity against the Southern Army Worm (Spodoptera eridania) and Gram-positive bacteria.

The fermentation, isolation, and structural elucidation of the title polyether antibiotic (I) of Streptomyces salvialis are reported.Following Et acetate extraction, gel filtration and TLC, the compound was analyzed by thermospray mass spectrometry, fast-atom bombardment mass spectrometry, and 13C and 1H NMR spectrometry and determined to be I.The monosaccharide structure was verified by gas chromatog./mass spectrometry.
