Vibrating-mesh nebulizers ensure currently the best deposition output and are recommended in routine use in intensive care unit. However, jet nebulizers remain the most frequently used nebulizers.
On a bench study, aerosol delivery through a high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) was increased using a vibrating-mesh nebulizer as compared to a jet nebulizer.
Lung distribution of nebulized particles delivered through a HFNC has never been investigated in vivo. The aim of this study was to compare aerosol lung distribution with both nebulizers through a HFNC by SPECT-CT.

Development and application of dual-modality tumor-targeting SPIONs for precision breast cancer imaging

Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) have gained attention as contrast agents in cancer imaging due to their unique magnetic properties, enhancing MRI's effectiveness. This study introduces an innovative approach by functionalizing SPIONs with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) and a novel C-peptide derived from endostatin, aimed at improved tumor targeting. This C-peptide targets integrin αv receptors, prominently overexpressed in breast cancer cells, enhancing specificity and imaging efficacy. The SPION-DTPA-C-peptide provided precise MRI capabilities and significantly inhibited cell viability and migration in vitro (p < 0.01). The DTPA coating also facilitates the chelation of technetium-99m (^99mTc), allowing dual-modality imaging with SPECT. Comprehensive characterization via XRD, EDX, TEM, FT-IR, and VSM confirmed successful synthesis, functionalization, spherical morphology, optimal size, and superparamagnetic characteristics. In vitro studies demonstrated selective targeting of 4T1 mammary carcinoma cells by SPION-DTPA-C-Peptide, exerting cytotoxic effects and inhibiting cell migration. In vivo imaging in Balb-c mice bearing 4T1 xenograft tumors showed enhanced tumor targeting and contrast on both MRI and SPECT modalities. These findings highlight the potential of the SPION-DTPA-C-Peptide system for targeted cancer imaging, offering a promising strategy for integrated MRI and SPECT in cancer diagnosis and management.

The study of the degradation mechanism of MEA is of great significance for developing anti-degradation agents for MEA to achieve long-term stable operation of CO₂ capture.In this paper, the effects of air, CO₂, and rust on the long-period degradation behavior of MEA were investigated under simultaneous thermal and oxidative degradationBased on a systematic anal. of the long-cycle degradation products of MEA, new degradation products such as glycyl-L-alanine and pentetic acid were identified, which enriched the degradation pathways of MEA (18 degradation pathways of MEA were constructed), and DFT anal. was performed.The results showed that CO₂ can promote the degradation of MEA.Rust makes it easier for MEA to move in the direction of generating zwitterionic, thus greatly inhibiting the generation of compounds in other pathways, leading to fewer degradation products.The DFT anal. showed that the degradation process of MEA involved endothermic and exothermic reactions, where the highest energy was absorbed for degradation to 1-Piperazinecarboxaldehyde (170.561 kcal/mol) and the highest energy was released for degradation to 4-Hydroxyisovaline (397.483 kcal/mol).In the process of CO₂ capture technol. with MEA, adding appropriate rust or lowering the reaction temperature can enhance the long-term operation of CO₂ capture technol., as well as reduce the cost of the capture technol. and improve the capture efficiency.

Monte Carlo-based estimation of patient absorbed dose in 99mTc-DMSA, -MAG3, and -DTPA SPECT imaging using the University of Florida (UF) phantoms

It is generally accepted that children's organs are more sensitive to radiation than adults, due to their growth rate. Therefore, evaluating the absorbed dose in children to avoid irrecoverable damage is highly crucial. In this work, absorbed dose by different organs of children within the SPECT imaging for the ^99mTc-MAG3, ^99mTc-DTPA, and ^99mTc-DMSA that are commonly employed for pediatric patients, were estimated through the use of Monte Carlo simulation and the University of Florida's (UF) voxel-wise phantoms at the ages of 4, 8, 11, and 14-years old. The results showed that the highest absorbed dose was by kidneys and when ^99mTc-DMSA was used. Also, the highest and lowest absorbed dose in the organs occurred when ^99mTc-DMSA and ^99mTc-MAG3 were used, respectively. The simulation results were in good agreement with the ICRP 128 data.

LOUIS, April 02, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Curium announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved its generic version of the Kit for the Preparation of Technetium Tc 99m Pentetate Injection, often referred to as DTPA (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid). Technetium Tc 99m pentetate is a radioactive diagnostic most often used for lung ventilation imaging and evaluation of pulmonary embolism when paired with perfusion imaging in adult and pediatric patients and administered by nebulizer for inhalation among other indications. Ensure safe handling and preparation procedures to protect patients and health care workers from unintentional radiation exposure. Use the lowest dose of Technetium Tc 99m pentetate necessary for imaging. Encourage patients to drink fluids and void as frequently as possible after intravenous administration. Radiation risks associated with the use of Technetium Tc 99m pentetate are greater in pediatric patients than in adults due to greater radiosensitivity and longer life expectancy. Bronchospasm in Lung Ventilation Studies: As with other inhaled medications, inhalation of Technetium Tc 99m pentetate solution may result in acute bronchoconstriction, especially in patients with heightened bronchoreactivity, such as patients with asthma or other lung or allergic disorders. Monitor all patients for bronchoconstriction. ADVERSE REACTIONSAdverse reactions are presented in decreasing order of reported frequency: Immune system disorders: allergic reaction, anaphylactic reaction, angioedema.Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: rash, itching, hives, erythema.Respiratory, thoracic and mediastinal disorders: throat irritation, wheezing.Vascular disorders: hypotension, hypertension.Nervous system disorders: headache, fainting, dizziness.General disorders and administration site conditions: chills.Gastrointestinal disorders: nausea, vomiting.Cardiac disorders: cyanosis, tachycardia. Technetium Tc 99m pentetate is transferred across the placenta. No animal reproductive studies have been conducted with Technetium Tc 99m pentetate. All radiopharmaceuticals have the potential to cause fetal harm depending on the fetal stage of development and the magnitude of the radiation dose. If considering Technetium Tc 99m pentetate administration to a pregnant woman, inform the patient about the potential for adverse pregnancy outcomes based on the radiation dose from Technetium Tc 99m pentetate and the gestational timing of exposure. The estimated background risk of major birth defects and miscarriage for the indicated population is unknown. In the U.S., general population, the estimated background risk of major birth defects and miscarriage in clinically recognized pregnancies are 2% to 4% and 15% to 20%, respectively. Lactation: There are limited data available in scientific literature on the presence of Technetium Tc 99m pentetate in human milk. There are no data available on the effects of Technetium Tc 99m pentetate on the breastfed infant or the effects on milk production. Based on the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission guidelines for breastfeeding interruption after exposure to radiopharmaceuticals, breastfeeding interruption is not recommended for Technetium 99m pentetate, at levels less than 1000 MBq (30 mCi). The developmental and health benefits of breastfeeding should be considered along with the mother’s clinical need for Technetium Tc 99m pentetate, any potential adverse effects on the breastfed child from Technetium Tc 99m pentetate or from the underlying maternal condition. Pediatric Use: Technetium Tc 99m pentetate is indicated for lung ventilation and evaluation of pulmonary embolism when paired with perfusion imaging and for renal visualization, assessment of renal perfusion, and estimation of glomerular filtration rate in pediatric patients ages birth to less than 17 years of age. Pediatric use is supported by evidence from controlled studies in adults and dosing and safety are based on clinical experience. The radiation risk of Technetium Tc 99m pentetate is greater in pediatric patients than adults. Geriatric Use: No formal studies of Technetium Tc 99m pentetate in the elderly were performed to determine whether they respond differently from younger subjects. Other reported clinical experience has not identified differences in responses between the elderly and younger patients. In general, dose selection for an elderly patient should be cautious, usually starting at the low end of the dosing range, reflecting the greater frequency of decreased hepatic, renal, or cardiac function, and of concomitant disease or other drug therapy.
