ABSTRACT:

The human body gets exposed to a variety of toxins intentionally or unintentionally on a regular basis from sources such as air, water, food, and soil. Certain toxins can be synthetic, while some are biological. The toxins affect the various parts of the body by activating numerous pro‐inflammatory markers, like oxidative stresses, that tend to disturb the normal function of the organs ultimately. Nowadays, people use different types of herbal treatments, viz., herbal drinks that contain different spices for detoxification of their bodies. One such example is turmeric, the most commonly available spice in the kitchen and used across all kinds of households. Turmeric contains curcumin, which is a natural polyphenol. Curcumin is a medicinal compound with different biological activities, such as antioxidant, antineoplastic, anti‐inflammatory, and antibacterial. Hence, this review gives a comprehensive insight into the promising potential of curcumin in the detoxification of heavy metals, carbon tetrachloride, drugs, alcohol, acrylamide, mycotoxins, nicotine, and plastics. The review encompasses diverse animal‐based studies portraying curcumin's role in nullifying the different toxic effects in various organs of the body (especially the liver, kidney, testicles, and brain) by enhancing defensive signaling pathways, improving antioxidant enzyme levels, inhibiting pro‐inflammatory markers activities and so on. Furthermore, this review also argues over curcumin's safety assessment for its utilization as a detoxifying agent.

Efficacy of Curcuma longa in relieving pain symptoms of knee osteoarthritis patients: a systematic review and metaanalysis of clinical trials

Objective:

Osteoarthritis (OA), particularly knee OA, affects 24% of adults and is a significant cause of disability. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used but have many adverse effects. Antioxidant and anti-iflammatory properties of Curcuma longa might decrease pain thus improving joint function.

Methods:

This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on Curcuma longa efficacy for knee OA. We reported mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) for continuous outcomes and evaluated Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) total score over 4 to 6 weeks for treatment effects.

Results:

Ten RCTs with 786 patients were included. Curcuma longa significantly improved VAS for pain than placebo (MD 18.25, 95% CI 7.79 to 28.72, p=0.0006). It was not inferior to NSAIDs in WOMAC total score improvement (MD -11.99, 95% CI -39.21 to 15.23, p=0.39). Both dosages (<1,000 and ≥1,000 mg/day) of Curcuma longa demonstrated similar improvement in VAS for pain compared to placebo (MD 27.02, 95% CI 1.45 to 52.60, p=0.04; MD 21.48, 95% CI 1.78 to 41.18, p=0.03).

Conclusion:

Curcuma longa benefits knee OA pain and function, being more effective than placebo and comparable to NSAIDs. Despite positive results, limitation and heterogeneity of the studies necessitates further research to explore optimal dosages and administration methods of Curcuma longa as therapeutic option for knee OA.

Synergetic Effects of Sericin and Turmeric on Burn Wound Healing in Mice

Abstract:

Burn wounds are one of the most hazardous issues, globally. Silkworm produces a protein called sericin. Sericin assists in wound healing by facilitating the proliferation of keratinocytes and fibroblasts, while turmeric is potentially helpful in wound healing because of its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-infectious activities. The current study aimed to investigate the synergetic and individual effects of turmeric, sericin, and their nanoparticles on burn wounds in mice. The female mice having age of 2 months (each weighing 29-30 g) were arbitrarily distributed in 7 groups. Five mice were added to each group. Burn wounds were induced in mice by using a hot metal rod. Burn wounds were evaluated histologically and morphologically. Turmeric nanoparticles substantially improved the wound contraction area as compared to the negative control group and other treatment groups. The serum level of glutathione (4.9 ± 0.1 µmol/L), catalase (6.0 ± 0.2 mmol/mL), glutathione peroxidase (183.4 ± 5.1 U/L), and superoxide dismutase (194.6 ± 5.1 U/mL) was significantly increased in the turmeric nanoparticles (TNPs) group as compared to the negative control (2.8 ± 0.1 µmol/L, 3.5 ± 0.1 mmol/mL, 87.8 ± 3.0 U/L, and 92.0 ± 4.8 U/mL respectively). The minimum levels of malondialdehyde (3.8 ± 0.2 mmol/L) were noticed in the TNPs group contrary to the negative control (7.4 ± 0.2 mmol/L). The restoration of the epidermis was also observed to be faster in the TNPs group as compared to all other treatment groups. The histopathological analysis also demonstrated the effectiveness of turmeric, sericin, and their nanoparticles. In conclusion, turmeric, sericin, and their nanoparticles are effective in improving the healing process of burn wounds, but TNPs showed the most effective results as compared to all other treatment groups.

Botanicals Like Turmeric, Green Tea Are Harming Americans' Livers

MONDAY, Aug. 5, 2024 -- Botanicals like turmeric , green tea and black cohosh may seem benign, but their overuse is being increasingly linked to liver injury. New research suggests that 7% of U.S. adults are using at least one of the six leading botanicals, the equivalent of 15.6 million people. Many are ending up in hospitals for liver toxicity, researchers report. Because there's almost no regulatory oversight over botanicals, chemical tests of products linked to liver crises "show frequent discrepancies between product labels and detected ingredients," noted a team led by Dr. Alisa Likhitsup . She's an assistant professor of gastroenterology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. The researchers focused on the use of six of the most popular botanicals: Turmeric, green tea extract, the Garcinia cambodgia plant, black cohosh, red yeast rice and ashwagandha. Perusing 2017-2021 data on almost 9,700 adults in a federal health database, they found high rates of botanical use. For example, Likhitsup's group estimated that more than 11 million adults regularly take turmeric supplements, often with the notion that it can ease pain or arthritis . That's not too far below the approximately 14.8 million who take an NSAID pain reliever for much the same reasons. Unfortunately, "multiple randomized clinical trials have failed to demonstrate any efficacy of turmeric-containing products in osteoarthritis," and overdoing it on turmeric has been linked to serious liver toxicity, the researchers said. Likewise, over 3 million adults are estimated to be taking another potential liver toxin, green tea extract, usually to help boost energy and aid in weight loss. But again, "multiple studies have failed to demonstrate any objective evidence of weight loss and sustained improvement in mood or energy levels" with products containing the active ingredients in green tea extract, the Michigan team noted. Other claims, many unfounded, are made for other botanicals: Garcinia cambodgia is touted for weight loss, black cohosh for easing hot flashes and ashwagandha to help build muscle. But Likhitsup and colleagues noted that consumers may be overdosing on botanicals, or getting misled by labels that don't reflect the actual ingredients in their supplements. That may be leading to more users ending up in the ER. According to a national database, cases of liver toxicity linked to botanical use, some severe or even fatal, nearly tripled between 2004 and 2014 -- from 7% of cases to 20%. Use of turmeric, green tea extract, Garcinia cambodgia were often implicated. Another study found such cases rising from 12.5% of liver toxicity cases in 2007 to 21.1% by 2015. Who's using these botanicals? According to the new study, the most common consumer is an older (average age about 52) white (75% of users) female (57%), who was typically well-off. People taking botanicals were more likely to be battling some kind of chronic illness, such as arthritis, thyroid disorders or cancer, compared to folks not using the supplements. In two-thirds of cases, people took a botanical while also taking a prescription medicine, the study found. Because of the danger of drug interactions and the threat to liver health, it's crucial that botanical users inform their doctors, Likhitsup's group said. When botanicals are overused, the damage to the liver "can not only be severe, leading to hepatocellular [liver] injury with jaundice, but also fatal, leading to death or liver transplantation," the research team warned. A prior study found that the number of liver transplants required due to botanical overuse has jumped by 70% between 2009 and 2020. The Michigan team believe better regulation and oversight are needed to protect consumers. "Considering widespread and growing popularity of botanical products, we urge government authorities to consider increasing the regulatory oversight on how botanicals are produced, marketed, tested and monitored in the general population," they wrote.
