Pontiac General Hospital taps Medsphere OpenVista EHR to turnaround ailing facility

Pontiac General Hospital announced that it will implement the OpenVista electronic health record system from EHR vendor Medsphere Systems. The new owners of the 306-bed hospital in Pontiac, Michigan, said they will use the EHR to improve management practices and clinical workflows as they grow staff and expand available services in an effort to revive the troubled facility. After declaring bankruptcy twice in six years, Pontiac General was believed to be shuttered, enough so that CEO John Ponczocha told local press that Pontiac never actually closed. Now, Sant Partners is attempting to breathe new life into Pontiac General and sees a low-cost enterprise EHR as a key to success. Sanyam Sharma formed Sant last summer to focus on the healthcare provider turnaround space. Pontiac General serves the surrounding community as a healthcare hub by offering services ranging from acute care to urgent care and family medicine to obstetrics, Sant Partners said. The hospital also has a mental health unit that offers 24-hour crisis services for youth, adults and families. Sharma “We chose OpenVista because it gives us the functionality and clinical support we need at a price point that makes sense for a hospital that is investing in all areas of the organization, not just healthcare IT,” Sharma said. “Some of the better known solutions were just not financially realistic for us because the costs are not justifiable.” Medsphere CEO Irv Lichtenwald said that the model of implementing a low-cost EHR in similar hospital settings can improve clinical support. In Pontiac’s case, Sharma said they plan to build on the technology to offer dialysis, rehabilitation, outpatient pharmacy and surgery, and substance abuse treatment services in the future.
