GigXR, DICOM Director introduce new 3D medical imagery learning application

(Credit: GigXR/Business Wire) GigXR, a start-up focused on extended reality (XR) training, and DICOM Director, a provider of medical imaging solutions, have introduced a new 3D medical imagery learning application, DICOM XR Library. DICOM XR Library is powered by INTRAVISION XR, a cloud-based 3D model medical software solution from the DICOM Director, that automates the creation and visualisation of 3D models. The new application will render a complete set of hyper-realistic 3D medical imagery derived from MRI and CT scans for use in teaching, training, and simulation. It provides nursing and medical schools, hospitals, and the Department of Defence with a new capability to leverage holographic medical imagery in anatomy and pathophysiology curricula. DICOM Director CEO David Pearlstone said: “As a surgical oncologist for 25 years, I relied on imaging to perform complex surgeries. I also saw firsthand the need for better imaging technology. “In the operating room, I was guided by what was essentially a picture taped to light during a six-plus-hour liver resection. By partnering with GigXR, we are ensuring that tomorrow’s medical professionals will work from more detailed, sophisticated content from day one.” DICOM XR Library works by providing a 360° in-depth view of pathology and injury manifests in diagnostic imaging, which prepares the professionals to diagnose a real-life patient. Also, the application shows holograms with full-dimensional anatomy, adding pathophysiology to the skill of reading and interpreting test results. DICOM XR Library is delivered by the Gig Immersive Learning Platform, an enterprise software for institution-wide immersive teaching, training, and simulation across different levels. It is managed through a dashboard, where instructors can curate a custom library of complementary applications to incorporate holographic content into their curricula. The application allows multiple learners to observe and interact with immersive content from anywhere in the world, using a mixed reality headset or Android or iOS mobile phone or tablet. They can view the content at any angle, resize or rotate the cross-section of a medical imaging hologram, and view or hide abnormalities, pathologies and injuries. GigXR CEO Jared Mermey said: “Peer-reviewed research has proven the efficacy of mixed reality training while studies conducted by our customers show how much learners prefer holograms to analogue teaching methods. “As healthcare institutions go from proof of concepts to scaled immersive simulation using mixed reality, the Gig Immersive Learning Platform scales with them in both breadth of content and technological delivery. “It is true enterprise scale technology delivering hyper-realistic XR training experiences made by incredible partners like DICOM Director and through collaborations with the world’s foremost healthcare institutions.”
