Executive Change
Five months ago, Rupert Vessey stepped out of his influential R&D post at Bristol Myers Squibb in a move clearly pointing to a new, though unannounced, chapter in biotech. And he unveiled his next career step today with the news that he’s joining a buzzy Flagship Pioneering as their chief scientist. It’s a brand new position. The move takes him out of a Big Pharma that’s been working, sometimes struggling, to manage a major pipeline — including a host of drugs Vessey arranged to in-license for big bucks — and puts him squarely at one of the largest venture groups in biotech, where he’ll be widely familiar to the people mustering new companies around some emerging technologies.
