CoxHealth partners with Philips for in-house virtual care solution

US-based not-for-profit healthcare provider CoxHealth has teamed up with global health technology company Philips to implement a virtual care solution throughout its hospital network.
CoxHealth needed a solution staffed entirely by its own employees, just beyond intensive care units, which allows its staff to easily move between the bedside and virtual care environment.
The telehealth and virtual care approaches, which rapidly advanced during the Covid-19 pandemic, have been shown to improve patient care, patient experiences and outcomes.
CoxHealth has partnered with Philips to explore beyond just an electronic intensive care units (eICU) program, to better serve its patient population.
Both Philips and CoxHealth jointly created a solution based on the close integration of Philips’ eCareManager enterprise telehealth software and Capsule Surveillance software.
Philips EMR and care management business leader Shiv Gopalkrishnan said: “From the outset, the Philips team worked alongside CoxHealth to fully comprehend the vision of CoxHealth’s leadership team and identify the necessary key performance indicators and impact measurements.
“It was not a situation where we supplied a standard solution, it was an opportunity for us to listen and learn.
“We helped conceptualise the customer’s ideas and requirements as they designed a virtual care delivery program that would directly address the needs of their staff, while standardizing and improving care delivery and helping achieve the goal of better patient outcomes.”
The eCareManager is an AI-powered solution that leverages advanced clinical algorithms to generate patient data and translates it into meaningful information.
It helps CoxHealth clinical staff identify patients who are at high-risk, wherever they are in the hospital, and allocate resources accordingly.
With a centralised database of patient information, the solution ensures that bedside and virtual care teams always have access to up-to-date information.
Philips Capsule Surveillance is designed to detect the onset of emergent, potentially actionable conditions early and inform the care team, approved by the US FDA last year.
The surveillance solution provides continuous analysis of live-streaming medical devices and other patient data to help identify actionable patient insights to support proactive care.
The combined solution enables caregivers to receive contextualised notifications, view patient data such as acuity scores and vital signs waveforms, and access insights and expert advice.
It can be used at the patient’s bedside, virtual care command centre, or in the medical facility.
Philips will add the solution to every in-patient ICU and medical-surgical patient room at Cox South, Cox Medical Center Branson, Cox Barton County, and Cox Monett hospitals.
In addition to mobile carts for emergency departments in several system hospitals, CoxHealth is expected to have the technology in around 700 beds, by the end of this year.
CoxHealth system chief nursing officer and senior vice president Beth Polivka said: “The excitement from our clinical staff about this [new way of working] is overwhelming. Because of this change in our approach to care, we have experienced nurses coming back to us that may have left before because they weren’t sure if they wanted to continue doing bedside care.
“Our staff has reported feeling better supported in providing the best patient care. In addition to improved clinical outcomes, including a reduction in central line infections and readmissions, we also anticipate this being a big differentiator for us with the recruitment of staff, and we look forward to welcoming even more talented people to our team.”
