New Year Wellness Guide to Start the Year Off Right

AHA
ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--According to Statista, about 22% Americans stuck to New Year’s resolutions they set for themselves heading into 2022. With last year’s number staggeringly low, it is important to keep goals attainable. As January ramps up and people across the country are looking to accomplish large life changing goals, although important, small wins also go a long way when it comes to overall health and wellness. As implementing resolutions into daily routines begins, Jewels Rhode, MPH, Lifestyle and Travel Expert & Wellness Advocate, shares her top health tips for starting the new year off right to make 2023 one of the best yet.
'January can be a daunting month with many trying to achieve new goals as they start the year fresh'
“January can be a daunting month with many trying to achieve new goals as they start the year fresh,” shares Rhode. “I want Americans to know that they don’t have to put so much pressure on themselves and can start by changing small habits to feel better all-around and make the most of 2023, that will leave lasting impressions.”
Rhode shares her expert advice for those looking to start their New Year’s resolutions and make gradual changes in 2023.
Stay hydrated. If you have issues with staying hydrated, get creative with how you drink your water. Adding 1-2 tablespoons of chia seeds to your water helps for sustained energy and hydration. Also, hydration packets like Liquid I.V are helpful for relieving dehydration and replenishing your electrolytes.
Support your immune system daily. It is important especially with cold and flu season and harsh winter weather conditions, to make sure our immune systems are in tip top shape. I recommend making sure you are getting enough fruits and vegetables into your diet from leafy greens to oranges packed with vitamin C. I like taking a gummy multivitamin like vitafusion Multi + Immune, as they are a delicious and easy way to support your immune system daily. If you do feel yourself coming down with a cold, I suggest taking Zicam RapidMelts at the first sign to shorten it. Drinking a daily hot cup of tea with ginger, honey, and lemon also have many health benefits including boosting your immune system.
Exercise regularly. The American Heart Association recommends at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise and at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. If you can’t make it to a gym, there are many other options to get exercise from home or during work. Whether it be walking around the block during lunch or following an instructor led 30-minute workout video online, it is so important to keep moving and track progress with personal records as you go. Some of my favorite fitness YouTube Channels are MadFit and MrandMrsMuscle. My favorite fitness apps include Reset which has a variety of gym-based and at home exercises as well as healthy meal suggestions and Any Distance, a fun way to track all workout activities.
Create a wellness plan. At the beginning of the new year, I like to write out my health and wellness goals and a corresponding action plan. Including rewards to incentivize yourself and share with someone to keep you accountable, is a method that I follow. A wellness plan really helps keep yourself in check and makes sure you are staying on target with what you want to achieve.
Schedule your annual physical. While a doctor’s visit can be stressful for many, a yearly physical is necessary with your primary care physician to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary. Your annual physical allows you to have a general status update of your health and helps to keep you up to date with preventive screenings.
