A partnership between Memorial Rehabilitation Institute and Luna aims to reduce access barriers to physical therapy for patients in South Florida, according to an announcement.
Memorial Rehabilitation Institute, housed at Memorial Regional Hospital South in Florida, has partnered with Luna, a tech-enabled in-home care provider, to expand access to outpatient physical therapy services.
Luna will serve as an extension of the Memorial Healthcare System outpatient PT program. The new offering, dubbed Memorial Physical Therapy at Home, will be available to all new and existing patients from Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties and will start taking appointments in April.
“South Florida is one of the country’s largest markets for outpatient services,” Scott Wester, president and CEO of Memorial Healthcare System, said in a press release. “Our partnership with Luna enables Memorial to extend its services and provide convenient, high-quality physical therapy to patients beyond the geographic limits of our facilities, while further positioning Memorial as a leader in outpatient rehabilitation and ancillary care.”
Patients can tap into Luna’s online portal and a network of therapists to choose from based on various needs. Then, they schedule an appointment and care takes place in person at a patient’s preferred time and location. The same therapist treats the same patient for the duration of their care journey, and they can communicate between visits using the platform.
Unlike remote or virtual care, Luna’s licensed physical therapists provide 1:1 hands-on care from the convenience of a patient’s home, according to the company.
“Luna’s partnership with Memorial Healthcare System reduces barriers to access physical therapy for all patients in South Florida,” Palak Shah, co-founder and head of clinical operations at Luna, said in the announcement. “This will allow more patients to complete their treatment regimens at a place and time that works best for them.”
Luna currently operates in 27 states and has treated more than 35,000 patients in their homes. It works with the likes of AARP, Emory Health, Intermountain Healthcare and UCLA Health.
The company has expanded rapidly. Since its founding in 2018, Luna claims it has seen more than 6,000% percent growth in visits. The latest partnership is part of Memorial Healthcare System’s effort to meet the expectations of patients while also improving outcomes, expanding geographic coverage and solidifying referrals, the health system said.
