A review. Developing and designing biocatalysts to introduce chiral centers in fine chems. such as API and intermediates require a unique blend of expertise, proprietary technologies, capabilities and know how in chem., microbiol., mol. biol., biochem. and bioprocess, not to mention intellectual property. Biodiversity and protein engineering represent the two most rewarding complementary approaches to make biocatalysts available, that are designed to the application targeted. Some of the proprietary used at Proteus to develop such new biocatalysts include CLIPS-O, L-Shuffling, and Phenomics. The use of these proprietary technologies in biocatalysis is described.
