The Saint Francis University Chem. Club was founded in 1957, 65 years ago. The club has expanded since its starting point, and the building of the new science center in 2013 only added to the club's growth. With the new design of the science center came the chem. student lounge, a communal place where students could study together and bond over their mutual interest in the chem. field. Today, the chem. club has brought the chem. students and faculty together as a family by hosting events that bring together the club, the larger Saint Francis community, and the even larger Loretto community. Each year, the club invites the new freshman class to take part in the club by hosting the freshman welcome where they are invited to play games and eat dinner together with the upperclassmen and faculty to start building relationships. The fall semester ends with the Christmas party and the announcement of the next year's officers. The ending of the spring semester comes with the Senior Sendoff, where the seniors are thanked for their participation in the Chem. Club and are recognized for their achievement with senior superlatives and a senior gift. Chem. Club also reaches out to the rest of the campus community by hosting events that invite everyone together. One such event that is new in recent years is celebrating Pi Day on March 14. Another new event this year is the STEAM prom, which will invite all students on campus to a fun night of dancing and food held in the atrium of the science center itself. The Chem. Club also reaches out to the local community by participating in a road cleanup once each semester with the Adopt a Highway program. Many members are also a part of the chem. outreach program, or ROCK (Rural Outreach Chem. for Kids) program. This organization goes out to local schools to teach the students about basic science concepts and includes fun hands-on activities to demonstrate the scientific teaching in a visual way. Participating in ROCK events helps students to share their chem. knowledge, practice organizational skills, and develop their public speaking skills. Throughout our many events, both on campus and off, the Saint Francis University Chem. Club strives to unite our students and faculty with each other, and with the community, to ensure that learning occurs beyond the classroom.
