Preplanting treatment of freshly harvested potato tubers with 2% thiourea [62-56-6] or 0.0004% gibberellin stimulated the conversion of starch into sugar and increased the respiration intensity.Stimulating cuts strengthened the effects of the chem. growth stimulants, and the combination treatment markedly shortened the time between planting and sprouting.Tubers, treated with cuts and chems., had an increased vitality, accelerated germination rate and growth, and a powerfully developing root system.

Growth and fruiting response of Vagnera prizovoi apple trees to growth retardant treatments

Cycocel (0.6%) and ethrel (0.1%) were tested for controlling tree size and improving yield on five-year-old apple trees .Irresp. of chem. and frequency of their application, trunk diameter (9.7-53.9%) and tree volume (46.34-79.67%) were greatly reduced.Both cycocel and ethrel significantly suppressed the vegetative growth, retarded the extension of shoots and reduced the leaf area but increased its area per unit length of shoot because of reduction of internodal length.The treated trees flowered more profusely and gave significantly higher yield than the control.Single application of cycocel in two successive years performed best.
