Digestion performance and waste air emissions in single-stage fermentation with post-inserted composting exemplified by the KOMPOGAS process

Investigations were performed at a full-scale plant for mech.-biol. waste treatment to optimize the thermophilic, single-stage dry fermentation and the subsequent postrotting step.The fermenter input material was disintegrated to <15 and <50 mm and residence times of 11 and 21 days were applied.Postrotting was carried out with various aeration and turning-over intensities.The biogas production amounted to ∼100 Nm³ per 1 Mg of fermenter input.The required stability criteria (respiration activity, gas formation potential, and TOC in the eluate and solid) were observed after 11-20 days of fermentation and 4 wk of postrotting with aeration and turning-over.Volatile organic compounds and NH₃ were liberated mainly within the first 2-3 wk of rotting.

Environmental impact assessment of installations for mechanical and biological waste treatment (MBA) and municipal incinerators

An ecol. comparison of 3 variants of each mech.-biol. waste treatment plants (MBP) and waste incinerators (WI) was performed by cumulative energy and gaseous release balancing.Erection and operation of the plants and the corresponding secondary treatment steps such as dumping of the mech.-biol. treated wastes, energetic utilization of the fluff fraction from MBP, energy credits for WIs, and transport costs were taken into account.The comparison reveals benefits of the MBPs with regard to the greenhouse potential and the release of toxic substances, while the WI variants were better evaluated as to the formation of photooxidants.The energy balances of the MBP variants are similar to those of the standard WI, whereas optimally fitted WIs reached the best results in this field, especially thanks to the high fuel utilization coefficientIntensive rotting MBP variants are clearly better evaluated as to their acidification potential than extensive natural draft rotting and the standard WI.The best-fitted WI makes the least contribution to the acidification potential.
