Work Physiological-Biomechanical Analysis of a Passive Exoskeleton to Support Occupational Lifting and Flexing Processes

BACKGROUND Industrial tasks that are characterized by high loads, a high repetition rate, and/or awkward body postures, put employees at higher risk to develop work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD), especially low back pain. To counteract the prevalence of WRMSD, human-robot interaction could improve the power of a person and reduce the physical strain. For the lower back, a reduction of spinal loading could be helpful. The passive upper-extremity exoskeleton Laevo® is developed to support physically heavy work: it supports the back during bending and should, consequently, result in less low back pain (Laevo®, the Netherlands).
OBJECTIVES The primary aim of this study is to assess to what extent wearing the exoskeleton changes:
* muscular activity of the erector spinae and biceps femoris muscles;
* knee compression force;
* posture of the upper and lower spine, trunk, hips and knees; ...in different tasks (static vs. dynamic), different trunk postures (trunk flexion vs. trunk flexion and rotation) and different knee postures (straight vs. stooped).
Secondary aims of this study are to assess to what extent wearing the exoskeleton changes:
* muscular activity of the trapezius descendens, rectus abdominis, vastus medialis and gastrocnemius medialis;
* perceived discomfort;
* heart rate;
* internal loadings on the spine, using a lumbar spine model;
* the performance of subjects during functional activities (e.g., stair climbing) when wearing the exoskeleton (either turned on or off); ...in different tasks (static vs. dynamic), different trunk postures (trunk flexion vs. trunk flexion and rotation), different knee postures (stoop vs. squat), and different static holding positions(0° vs. 30° vs. 60°) with different weights (0kg vs. 8kg vs. 16kg).

Directed stratification in polymer–latex film blends via pH and drying control

HYPOTHESIS:

Stratification in polymer-colloid films is governed by interfacial interactions, component miscibility, and drying kinetics. We hypothesize that introducing a pH-responsive, acid-rich oligomer (ARO2) into latex films enables controlled vertical phase separation through electrostatic tuning and evaporation rate modulation.

EXPERIMENTS:

We formulated latex-polymer films by blending ARO2 (8 wt% acrylic acid, Mₙ ≈ 4000 Da) with latex particles (d_h = 274 nm), varying pH (8.2-9.5), relative humidity (RH: 15-45 %), and ionic strength (0-50 mM NaCl). Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) was used to quantify ARO2-latex interdiffusion, while vertical distribution was characterized using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and cross-sectional atomic force microscopy (AFM).

FINDINGS:

FRET measurements indicated limited molecular mixing in dispersion (Φ_ET ≈ 0.06), creating conditions favorable for stratification during drying. At pH 9.5 and 15 % RH, electrostatic repulsion between ionized ARO2 and latex particles, combined with size ratio (α ≈ 18) and moderate Péclet numbers (Pe ≈ 2.1), drove diffusiophoretic transport of ARO2 toward the evaporating interface. CLSM and AFM revealed a distinct ARO2-rich surface layer (10-20 μm thick) under these conditions, while slower drying or increased salt concentration suppressed segregation. This controllable stratification mechanism enables design of structured polymer-latex coatings: pH > 9 + low RH promotes surface enrichment, while pH < 8 or high RH yields uniform distribution.

Nutritional and functional roles of an endo-1,4-β-D-mannanase in young tom turkeys

This study evaluated the effects of increasing doses of β-mannanase (Natupulse® TS) on growth performance, cellular stress, and immune response in turkey toms fed an all-vegetable diet. A total of 1,920 male Hybrid Converter turkeys (40 birds/pen; 12 pens/treatment) were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments (T1 = 0, T2 = 400, T3 = 800, and T4 = 1200 TMU of mannanase per kg feed) in a randomized complete block design. A corn-soybean meal basal diet was fed from 0 to 35 days of age. Feed intake and BW were recorded on day 21 and 35 post hatch for BW gain (BWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) calculations. On day 21, ileal samples from five birds per treatment were analyzed for markers of oxidative stress, gut barrier integrity, and inflammation using real-time quantitative PCR. There were no significant differences in all measured performance parameters within the 5-week period, however there was a tendency for longer intestinal length (P = 0.072) in turkeys fed the basal diet compared to enzyme-added treatments. In addition, β-mannanase supplementation reduced (P < 0.05) the mRNA expression of heat shock proteins (HSP60, HSP70, HSP90) in T4 compared to T1. Barrier function genes (CLDN1, JAM3) also showed significant improvements (P < 0.05). The mRNA expression of ileal superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1) was unaffected by treatments. Additionally, inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNFα, IL-4, IL-10) and C-reactive protein (CRP) expression were significantly lower (P < 0.05) in mannanase-fed groups compared to the control group. In conclusion, increasing β-mannanase supplementation (Natupulse® TS) for young turkeys had no significant performance effect but caused an improvement in intestinal physiology, reduction in intestinal inflammation and oxidative stress, with enhanced gut barrier integrity.

Solution-Processed Temperature-Adaptive Radiative Paint as a Thermal Imaging Sensitizer

Thermography detects mid-infrared radiation from surfaces based on the Stefan-Boltzmann law, mapping surface temperatures and potentially revealing subsurface thermal activity. Recent developments offer an alternative strategy to traditional camera-based improvements: a thermal imaging sensitizer (TIS) coating whose emissivity increases sharply with local temperature, amplifying small thermal variations into high-contrast signals. Existing TIS structures are nanofabricated solid membranes and face significant challenges in fabrication complexity. Here, we present a solution-processed, liquid form of TIS, termed temperature-adaptive radiative paint (TARP), to address these limitations. TARP offers drastically reduced fabrication costs, scalability to large areas, applicability to curved surfaces, and an extended operating temperature range, while maintaining the function of temperature amplification. Application of TARP enhances small temperature contrast by more than 3 times, substantially improving ambient thermography and enabling broader applications such as detection of structural defects and hot spots in electronic components.

Madrigal Pharmaceuticals Announces Additions to Its Leadership Team

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., Jan. 29, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Madrigal Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:MDGL), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company pursuing novel therapeutics for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), today announced three new members of its leadership team: Mark Barrett joins Madrigal as Chief Business Officer, Clint Wallace joins as Chief Human Resources Officer and Tina Ventura joins as Chief Investor Relations Officer. “I am delighted to welcome Mark, Clint and Tina to the team,” said Bill Sibold, Chief Executive Officer of Madrigal. “As we prepare for a first-to-market launch of resmetirom in NASH with significant fibrosis, we are also building a foundation for enduring leadership. These new leaders are not only experts in their respective areas but have experience scaling teams and organizations. They will each play a pivotal role in Madrigal’s next phase of growth.” Mark Barrett brings more than 25 years of biopharmaceutical leadership and industry experience to Madrigal, with a track record of success completing a wide range of partnerships and acquisitions to build commercial portfolios and R&D pipelines across therapeutic areas. He was most recently co-founder, Director, and CEO of Lassen Therapeutics, a biotechnology company focused on discovery and development of novel antibody therapeutics in immunological diseases and cancer. Mr. Barrett has also served as Entrepreneur in Residence at Frazier Healthcare Partners, where he focused on starting and financing new biotech companies. Prior to Lassen, he held leadership positions in Strategy and Business Development at Johnson & Johnson and Sanofi. He holds an M.B.A from the University of California at Berkeley and a B.S. degree in Biology from Duke University. Clint Wallace joins Madrigal from Kenvue, where he served as Senior Vice President Human Resources, Global Functions and Organizations and was responsible for organizational design and talent succession strategy. Prior to Kenvue, he was the Senior Vice President Human Resources, North America, Sanofi, from 2016-2022, serving as a member of the Sanofi Global HR Leadership Team. Prior to Sanofi, Mr. Wallace served in HR leadership positions at BASF Corporation, GE Healthcare and Pratt & Whitney. He was a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Air Force and retired in June 2008 after 21 years of service. He holds an M.B.A. from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a B.S. degree in Manufacturing Engineering from Central Connecticut State University. Tina Ventura brings nearly 25 years of experience in global health care investor relations and communications to Madrigal. Before joining Madrigal, she was Chief Investor Relations Officer at Horizon Therapeutics (acquired by Amgen) where she led the company's investor relations efforts to shape its investment identity as a rare disease-focused biotech, build and develop its investor base and drive shareholder value creation. Prior to Horizon, Ventura was Divisional Vice President, Investor Relations, Abbott, spending 16 years at the diversified healthcare company in positions of increasing responsibility in communications and investor relations.
