The correlation between outdoor exposures and accelerated tests as evidenced by chalking, gloss retention, and mech. properties was examined for 4 coatings on exterior grade hardboard and white pine.Each of the following coatings was tested in both green and white colors: an air-drying long oil oxidizing alkyd, a heat-curing alkyd amine, and 2 high-mol.-weight acrylic hydrosols.Correlations in chalking were good; gloss retention and color differences gave pos. correlations, but accelerated tests produced greater toughness i n paint films than did outdoor exposure.Gloss loss, fading, and chalking of the coatings on hardboard were accelerated 5-10 fold by inserting boiling-water immersions and freezing cycles into the standard Weather-Ometer test cycle.
