Canary-VOC: A microsystem for the analysis of VOCs in water

There are many reasons to monitor ground water for volatile organic compounds or VOCs, for instance spills or leaks from industrial processes or leaking underground storage tanks.Hundreds of millions of dollars are spent annually to screen thousands of monitor wells for chem. contamination.Government and industry are in need of sensors to detect and monitor VOCs in water on a long-term-basis.Defiant Technologies is developing a sensor system dubbed Canary-VOC that integrates MEMS components and nano-materials for detection of VOCs in water.The use of low power MEMS components like a micro preconcentrator and micro gas chromatog. column enables battery operation and compact design for use in the field.Testing was conducted on the Canary-VOC system to demonstrate its ability to produce data that meets acceptance criteria set forth by the EPA.A quality control set, method detection limit study, and a blind sample test will be presented.
