A new oxidative desulfurization process (UniPure), demonstrated in a pilot plant, for ultra low S diesel fuel is presented.Diesel fuel with up to 500 ppm S was heated up to 90-100° in an oxidizing reactor that contained H2O2, H2O and organic acid catalysts.The alkylated dibenzothiophene compounds in the diesel fuel were oxidized very fast to the corresponding sulfones which were extractedThe oxidized diesel, that did not contain residual peroxides was contacted with NaOH to remove traces of acids, washed and dried.The resulting diesel fuel had an extremely low S level of about 2 ppm, and compared to hydrotreating processes with similar desulfurization performance, the presented technol. is relatively inexpensive.
