A qual. model shows that absorption of 0.1% SO₂ from boiler flue gases with atomized lime slurry occurs in 2 phases.In the first phase a large number of Ca(OH)₂ particles move freely in a liquid phase and the reaction rate is controlled by the rate of Ca(OH)₂ dissolution and by the rate of Ca(OH)₂ diffusion through the CaSO₃ formed on the particle surface.In the second phase the dried particles form a porous body and the reaction rate is controlled by pore diffusion.Recirculating partly reacted Ca(OH)₂ powder limits pore plugging and improves reagent utilization, but it also increases CaCO₃ formation.
