Lubricant, used in can lid manufacture, contains Bu stearate and palmitate, compounds known to cause haze in beer at levels above 0.05 μg/mL.Normally lubricant residues on the inner surface are minimal but excess lubricant added with the ring-pull rivet can transfer from outer to inner surface on stacking. Can beers with hazes of 0.9 EBC have been shown by gas chromatog. to contain lubricants at levels of 0.05 μg/mL.Hexane extraction of the inner surface of lids revealed high Bu stearate contamination, depleted by 60% when in contract with beer.Quality control methods for lubricant contamination on lids are described and limits discussed.
