Objective To compare the rotating torque and the extraction strength of the existing standard pedicle screws with three newly designed pedicle screws(the thread profile angle and the thread internal diameter taper are different)in the polyurethane material to study the biomech. properties of new pedicle screws and explore the biomech. properties of design elements of pedicle screw. Methods The standard pedicle screw and three newly designed pedicle screws were tested in a 40-grade polyurethane material by screwing in a torsion testing machine. At the same time, the standard pedicle screw and three newly designed pedicle screws were tested on the extraction performance of the20 grade polyurethane material on the universal testing machine. Both the rotating torque test and the extraction performance test were tested according to the Chinese pharmaceutical industry standard YY/T0119.2-2014 and the American Society for Testing and Materials(ASTM) standard ASTM F543.The polyurethane material adopted the standardized material of the American Society for Testing and Materials(ASTM) as the test block. Results The three new designs of pedicle screws were significantly higher than standard pedicle screws in both screwing torque and extraction performance. At the same time, the improvement of screwing torque was more obvious than the improvement of extraction performance. In addition, there were some differences among the three newly designed pedicle screws in the rotation torque and ex traction performance, but they were not obvious, especially in the anti-extraction performance. Conclusion Compared with standard pedicle screws, the newly designed pedicle screws have stronger biomech. fixation, but the difference among the new pedicle screws is not obvious.
