The resin matrix of dental composite usually contains prime methacrylate resins and diluent methacrylate resins.A resin matrix formulation has been developed in which no diluent is used but which still has reasonable viscosity for a high percentage of inorganic fillers. The advantages include low polymerization shrinkage, low polymerization heat, less degradation in aged products, and less hydrolysis in polymer chains. One formulation utilizing ethoxylated Bis-GMA and patented polycarbonate dimethacrylate produced a dental composite with superior strength, stain resistance, handling and appearance. The properties of the composite were compared with some brand-name composites on the market.
