Effects of suspended particulate matter from natural lakes in conjunction with coagulation to tetracycline removal from water

Coagulation is a common method used to remove suspended particulate matter (SPM) from the water supply. SPM has preferable adsorption ability for antibiotics in water; therefore, SPM adsorption and coagulation may be a possible way to remove tetracycline (TC) from water. This study carried out coagulation experiments combining SPM collected from a natural lake at a location with three common coagulants-polyaluminum sulfate, polyaluminum chloride, and polyferric sulfate-under different pH values, exploring the adsorption of TC by SPM, coagulation of SPM with TC, and the primary influencing factors of this process. The maximum removal rate of TC can reach 97.87% with an SPM concentration of 1000 mg/L. Multi-factor analysis of variance showed the importance of various TC removal factors, which were ranked as follows: SPM concentration ≫ initial TC concentration > type of coagulant > pH values. The higher the SPM concentration, the better the TC removal (p < 0.001). Fourier infrared spectroscopy results demonstrated the strong adsorption effect of SPM on TC after being combined with a coagulant, and scanning electron microscopy also indicated that SPM becomes effective nuclei in the coagulation process, which is a possible reason for better TC removal. However, the effluent turbidities under 1000 mg/L SPM concentrations were high without coagulant aid. With the addition of coagulant aid anion polyacrylamide, the TC removal remained unchanged, effluent turbidity significantly reduced, and the TC desorption became low. These results indicate that applying SPM from natural lakes in the coagulation process could potentially remove TC in water.

Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations of the effect of edge activators on the skin permeation behavior of transfersomes

Transfersomes (TRS) can provide sustained drug delivery and themselves are biocompatible, biodegradable and nontoxic. Edge activators (EAs) are key factors for increasing the deformability of TRS, and this active deformation mechanism is of commercial interest, especially at the molecular level. Accordingly, in this paper, the deformability of pure dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) vesicles, TRS with sodium cholate as an EA, and DPPC vesicles containing pogostone (POG) were compared via umbrella sampling technology. The DPPC conformation and membrane fluidity of these three types of bilayer systems were evaluated, and the changes in the membrane properties of vesicles caused by EAs were studied. EAs could increase the deformability of TRS by decreasing the deformation energy barrier due to their amphiphilic structures, which was similar to those of DPPC molecules. The membrane properties also changed via treatment with EAs including altering the tail chain angle, disturbing the ordered tail chain arrangement and prompting lateral diffusion of DPPC molecules. In addition, the impact of EAs on DPPC bilayers was further demonstrated to be concentration dependent. An ideal concentration was identified for the lowest amount of EA that offered a gel-liquid-crystalline phase transition of DPPC bilayers. Importantly, POG, a lipophobic transdermal drug, can also affect the skin permeation behavior of vesicles but had weaker effects than EA.

Determination of main components in Guanxin danshen capsules by HPLC

The aim is to determine content of tanshinol natrium, salvianolic acid B, cryptotanshinone, tanshinone I, tanshinone II A, ginsenoside Rg₁ and ginsenoside Rb₁ in Guanxin Danshen Capsules.HPLC was performed on C₁₈ column using acetonitrile-0.1% phosphoric acid(gradient elution) as mobile phase at flow rate of 0.8 m L·min^-1.The detection wavelengths were set at 270 nm and 203 nm.The column temperature was 30°C.Tanshinol natrium, salvianolic acid B, cryptotanshinone, tanshinone I, tanshinone II A, ginsenoside Rg₁ and ginsenoside Rb₁ showed good linearity in the concentration range of 7.1-113.6, 11.7-187.2, 6.6-105.0, 6.9-110.2, 7.3-116.0, 31.2-499.4 and 27.1-433.7μg·m L^-1, resp.And their average recovery rates were 99.51%(RSD=0.91%), 97.73%(RSD=1.35%), 97.20%(RSD=0.78%), 98.47%(RSD=0.69%), 99.12%(RSD=0.31%), 96.64%(RSD=0.86%) and 97.98%(RSD=1.02%), resp.The method is simple and accurate with good reproducibility, and it can be used for determination of main components in Guanxin Danshen Capsules.
