Stainless steel membranes internally coated with titania are used for tangential microfiltration in the sugar and starch industry for clarification of juice.The microfiltration of two juices from different locations was carried out in pilot plant trials.The optimization, economics and applications of the membrane process are discussed.

A review.During the past years, new applications of electrodialysis were developed.This technol. is integrated in process lines for demineralization or purification of organic mols. to minimize salted waste streams linked to ion exchange resins or to replace solvent extractionConventional electrodialysis with monopolar ion exchange membranes is applied for demineralization, purification and concentration mainly in food industry (whey demineralization, tartaric stabilization of wine...), in fine chem. industries and chem. industries for purification of organic mols. (glycol, glyoxal, PhOAc, amines, lactate...).Bipolar electrodialysis with bipolar membranes allows the conversion of salt into acid and base forms.This technol. is mainly applied to split organic salts in acid such as lactic, gluconic, acetic... or mineral salts from salt streams to recover and re-use acid and base.In food industries, it can be applied to adjust pH of wine, fruit juices, proteins solution to avoid the use of chems. and keep products as much natural as possible.

Industrial application of the ISMB (improved simulated moving bed) chromatographic process for the separation of sugars and non-sugars

In the liquid sugar industry, chromatog. can be a cost effective alternative to conventional ion exchange resins to sep. sugars from nonsugars.The use of chromatog. results in less waste effluents and pollution load, no consumption of chems. and lower power consumption.Significant progresses are achieved thanks to the Improved Simulating Moving Bed (ISMB) system which allows to reduce volume of resins and thus the capital costs, to limit the volume of elution water, and to minimize the dilution of product fraction.The first ISMB plant has been in operation in EUROPE for 2 yr to sep. sugars (fructose) from non sugars.The chromatog. plant is designed to operate continuously at a capacity ranging from 80 up to 110% of nominal flow, to achieve a min. purity of 96% with a min. recovery of 98,5%, and to limit the power consumption below 1,7 Kwh/m³.The starting material is a juice of 85% purity at 60 Brix.The above performances were obtained within less than one week after start-up with a volume of resins calculated using a load of 0,105 L/L.h.The operating parameters can be easily adjusted in function of variation of feed composition or end product specification, by means of a unique simulation program.
