Quinacillin disodium salt (I) was highly effective in protecting mice exptl. infected with penicillin-sensitive or penicillinase-producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus.Like other penicillinase-resistant penicillins, I was much less effective against infections initiated with methicillin-resistant strains.I was not toxic to laboratory animals, except when large doses were repeatedly administered to rabbits; under these conditions, toxic manifestations were attributable to changes in intestinal flora.I was poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract in man and animals, but was well adsorbed and distributed when administered parenterally.I was rapidly excreted in urine, and probably bile, apparently unchanged.I, like benzylpenicillin, was only moderately bound to serum proteins, and penetrated into inflammatory foci.

A gas chromatographic method is described for the determination of trace amounts of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (I) [1746-01-6], a toxic impurity in pesticide and herbicide formulations.Recoveries of I ranged from 89 to 98%, with a standard deviation of the method of 0.03 ppm at a level of 0.3 ppm.The limit of detection was about 0.05 ppm.The method allowed the detection of I in 2,4,5-T [93-76-5], ester formulations of 2,4,5-T, and in 2,4,5-trichlorophenol [95-95-4].

The preparation of the gastric-fistula cat, including details of the design of the cannula and restraining slings, is described. Information about the training and selection of suitable animals, and their housing and diet, is presented. The problems of the long-term use and maintenance of a colony of these animals over a 7-year period are discussed and details of colony losses over this time given. The main health problem was the occurrence of a subcutaneous infection, radiating from the base of the cannula, which was due to a benzylpenicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
