Abstract An exemplary peptide has been synthesized for the first time by an automated solid-phase instrumentation which utilized the new Adpoc (1 -(1-adamantyl) -1 -methylethoxycarbonyl-) group for protection of the a-amino groups of the amino acids. The pentapeptide, thymo-poietin-(32-36) was synthesized, and shown to be pure by criteria including HPLC. Using a Cytoxan (cyclophosphamide) model system for suppression of a primary, hemolytic, humoral, antibody level, thymopoietin-(32-36) showed low activity, and reversed the suppressing effect of Cytoxan. This biological activity apparently is the result of cummulative effect.

Immunological senescence in mice and its reversal by coenzyme Q10

A pronounced suppression of the humoral, hemolytic, primary immune response in old (22 months) mice was demonstrated as compared with this response in young (10 weeks) mice. The suppression is associated with a lower thymus weight:body weight ratio. In contrast, the ratios spleen weight:body weight and liver weight:body weight in 10 weeks and 22 months old mice remain almost constant. A single administration of coenzyme Q10--a non-toxic, non-specific stimulant of the host defense system--partly compensates the age-determined suppression of the humoral, immune response. This suppression probably results from an age-dependent imbalance of T cells: B cells ratio and a decline of their immunological responsiveness which is compensated by the administration of coenzyme Q10.

Positron lifetimes in heat treated and plastically deformed iron

The effects of heat treatment and deformation on positron [12585-85-2] annihilation in pure Fe and steel SAE 1006 [12611-81-3] were studied, using the method of life measurement.Fe3C and a Fe2N-Fe4N mixture were also studied.The positron mean life was unchanged for 99.95% F quenched from 650-1150°.That in annealed 99.95% Fe was slightly higher than in 99.99% Fe.The life in the steel was definitely lower than in pure Fe.The 22Na positron source was deposited on a 2 mg/cm2 Au foil and sandwiched between 2 sheets of sample.The specimens were heated to the desired temps in air for 20 min and the Fe ones were quenched in cold water from 6 temperatures in the above range.The steel specimens were quenched from 5 temperatures in the 550-950° range.Mean lifetimes for the Fe were 0.199-0.205 ±0.003 nsec and for the steel 0.181-0.190 ±0.003 nsec.The effects of plastic deformation of the Fe by hammering and hydraulic pressing were determinedHammering increased the positron annihilation life slightly, while pressing decreased it slightly.A qual. explanation of the anomaly is given.With the Fe3C specimens (powder and compacts) and Fe2N-Fe4N powder, 2 mean lives were observed, τ1 and τ2.The τ1 is attributed to positron annihilation inside the powder and τ2 at the surface.When Fe3C was compacted into a tablet, the intensity of τ2 was reduced from 28 to 16% due to reduction of surface area.
