Covenant High Plains Surgery Center Celebrates 100th Inspire® Therapy Procedure

1 November 2024
In Lubbock, Texas, on October 25, 2024, Covenant High Plains Surgery Center (CHPSC) proudly announced that Dr. David Cuthbertson has successfully performed his 100th Inspire procedure. Inspire is a treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) that has received approval from the FDA. This treatment is particularly beneficial for individuals who are unable to utilize Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy.

Ranked as the premier ambulatory surgery center in West Texas by Newsweek magazine, CHPSC has also been recognized as one of the leading surgery centers nationwide for four consecutive years. The integration of the Inspire procedure at CHPSC aligns with their commitment to offering advanced and effective treatments for OSA—a condition affecting 22 million Americans. The impact of OSA extends beyond the individual, contributing to vehicle and workplace accidents, cognitive impairments, and severe health concerns such as strokes and heart attacks.

While CPAP remains the primary treatment for OSA, it is not suitable for everyone, either due to lack of efficacy or intolerance. The Inspire treatment offers an alternative solution, working internally with the body’s natural breathing patterns to address sleep apnea. By providing mild stimulation, Inspire helps keep the airway open during sleep, enabling natural oxygen flow. Users can activate and deactivate the device using a small handheld remote before sleeping and upon waking.

The placement of the Inspire system involves a minor outpatient procedure. The device is inserted beneath the skin in the neck and chest area through two small incisions. Patients can typically return home on the same day of the procedure and manage any discomfort with over-the-counter pain medications.

Dr. David Cuthbertson, a distinguished otolaryngologist (ENT) in Lubbock, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "I'm thrilled to have reached the milestone of completing our 100th Inspire procedure at Covenant High Plains Surgery Center. The Inspire system marks a significant leap forward in sleep apnea treatment. It has been clinically proven to decrease sleep apnea incidents, boasts high patient satisfaction, and ensures substantial therapy adherence."
