Cozaar® (losartan potassium) is a medication approved for the treatment of hypertension, hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy, and nephropathy in type 2 diabetic patients. It works by blocking the action of angiotensin II on the AT1 receptor subtype. Losartan potassium is a non-peptide molecule, chemically described as 2-butyl-4-chloro-1-[p-(o-1H-tetrazol-5-ylphenyl)benzyl]imidazole-5-methanol monopotassium salt. It was first approved in the United States in 1995 by Organon & Co. As an AT1R antagonist, losartan potassium helps lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events. It is available under the trade name Cozaar® and is commonly prescribed as a first-line treatment for hypertension.
