Highlights from the four early access studies include: Continue Reading This visual abstract highlights results from the study titled "Artificial Intelligence Tools for Preconception Cardiomyopathy Screening Among Women of Reproductive Age" Dementia screening in older adults Two related studies from Indiana University tested a digital cognitive assessment tool for patients aged 65 and older across seven diverse primary care clinics. The first study found that nearly half of patients screened showed possible signs of cognitive impairment. A second companion study focused on implementation, showed that maintaining clinician engagement depended on allowing flexibility in workflow design across clinics. Screening rates increased throughout the 12-month study, and a brain-health navigator, who was a registered nurse, was introduced to support patients with positive screenings and assist clinicians with follow-up assessments. AI-enabled cardiovascular screening in women A Mayo Clinic pilot study evaluated whether AI-driven tools using electrocardiograms and a digital stethoscope could detect heart dysfunction in women of reproductive age. In the diagnostic cohort, which included women already scheduled for echocardiograms, the tools showed strong performance in identifying left ventricular systolic dysfunction (cardiomyopathy). In the screening cohort, made up of young women seen in routine primary care, the rate of positive screens was low, suggesting that the need for confirmatory echocardiograms is likely to be acceptable if routine screening is implemented. Tablet-based hearing screening in French family practice A study conducted in private family practices in France tested the feasibility of tablet-based hearing screenings using Bluetooth headphones. Out of 516 eligible patients, 219 completed the screening at their primary care visits. On average, it took about six minutes per patient to complete the process, including consent and instructions. Although 27 percent screened positive for hearing impairment, only a small number followed through with specialty care. An accompanying editorial emphasizes that the value of digital screening tools lies not only in what they do, but in how they are implemented. It calls for adaptable workflows, team-based care, and systems that support clinicians and patients beyond the moment of screening. We intend to complete this process in the coming months.” RNA Delivery In 2024, Altamira made further progress with the development of its peptide based xPhore™ nanoparticle platform. The technology allows for extrahepatic RNA delivery, in particular to sites of inflammation, a hallmark of cancer, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Once inside target cells, the nanoparticles disassemble and release their RNA payload at substantially higher rates than lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), the current industry standard. In August 2024, part of the Company’s expanding research and development team moved to the Switzerland Innovation Park in Allschwil near Basel. At the new location, the Company has access to modern and well-equipped lab facilities to support its growing activities. The key focus for the development activities has been on nanoparticle formulation and process development for nanoparticle manufacturing. Important progress was achieved with the development and refinement of analytical methods, the reproducibility of manufacturing and stability of the nanoparticles. Total operating loss from continuing operations increased from $6.6 million in 2023 to $6.9 million in 2024. Research and development expenses were $3.7 million in 2024 vs. $3.4 million in 2023. General and administrative expenses decreased from $3.5 million in 2023 to $3.2 million in 2024. Net finance expense decreased from $1.5 million in 2023 to $0.8 million in 2024 primarily as the Company incurred no more interest expenses (2023: $1.1 million). Net product sales of EYLEA in the first quarter of 2025, compared to the first quarter of 2024, were negatively impacted by (i) lower volume as a result of continued competitive pressures (as described below), loss in market share to compounded bevacizumab due to patient affordability constraints, and the continued transition of patients to EYLEA HD, and (ii) a lower net selling price. In addition, total EYLEA and EYLEA HD net product sales were negatively impacted by lower wholesaler inventory levels at the end of the first quarter of 2025 compared to the end of the fourth quarter of 2024. Total EYLEA and EYLEA HD net product sales decreased 30% on a sequential basis; however, physician unit demand decreased sequentially by 11%. EYLEA net product sales have been, and are likely to continue to be, negatively impacted by increased competition from other anti-VEGF products, including biosimilars, as well as the transition of patients from EYLEA to EYLEA HD. In addition, if independent not-for-profit patient assistance funds that provide copay assistance are unable to support eligible patients, this will likely have a continued negative impact on patient affordability resulting in lower utilization of higher-cost anti-VEGF agents. Sanofi collaboration revenue increased in the first quarter of 2025, compared to the first quarter of 2024, due to an increase in the Company's share of profits from the commercialization of antibodies, which were $1.018 billion and $804 million in the first quarter of 2025 and 2024, respectively. The change in the Company's share of profits from commercialization of antibodies was driven by higher profits associated with an increase in Dupixent sales. In the first quarter of 2025, the Company's GAAP effective tax rate (ETR) was 10.6%, compared to (3.0%) in the first quarter of 2024. The GAAP ETR increased in the first quarter of 2025, compared to the first quarter of 2024, due to lower tax benefits from less stock option exercises. In the first quarter of 2025, the non-GAAP ETR was 11.6%, compared to 6.1% in the first quarter of 2024. Capital Allocation In February 2025, the Company's board of directors authorized a new share repurchase program to repurchase up to an additional $3.0 billion of the Company's common stock.
