Effects of Phytoestrogen From Pueraria Mirifica in Improvement of Serum Lipid Parameters in Postmenopausal Women

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn about the effects of phytoestrogen from Pueraria Mirifica in improvement of serum lipid parameters. The primary question it aims to answer are:
• phytoestrogen from Pueraria Mirifica can reduce serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL and increase HDL or not
Participants will receive capsules which composed of dry weight 50 mg of Pueraria Mirifica twice a day for 2 months. Researchers will compare with diet control&life style modification to see if there is the improvement of serum lipid parameters

The association between serum vitamin D levels and abnormal lipid profile in pediatrics: A GRADE-assessed systematic review and dose–response meta-analysis of epidemiologic studies

AbstractContextSeveral studies have investigated the relationship between serum vitamin D and dyslipidemia in children and adolescents, but the findings have been contradictory.ObjectiveThe current systematic review and dose–response meta-analysis investigated the serum vitamin D – dyslipidemia relationship in children and adolescents.Data SourcesISI Web of Science, Scopus, MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE databases, and Google Scholar, were searched up to December 2022.Data ExtractionObservational studies that investigated the odds of dyslipidemia in categories of serum vitamin D levels in children were included, and their data were extracted.Data AnalysisPooling of 17 effect sizes from 15 studies (39 342 participants) showed that subjects with higher serum vitamin D had 27% lower odds of hypertriglyceridemia (odds ratio [OR] = 0.73; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.60, 0.88). A meta-analysis of 18 effect sizes from 16 studies (39 718 participants) illustrated that highest vs lowest serum vitamin D was related to 22% lower odds of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) (OR = 0.78; 95% CI: 0.66, 0.91). Also, a nonlinear association between serum vitamin D and odds of abnormal lipid profile was found: elevating values of 25-hydroxyvitamin D from 35 nmol/L to 55 nmol/L was associated with a decreasing trend in odds of hypertriglyceridemia, hyper low-density lipoprotein cholesterolemia, hypercholesterolemia, and hypo HDL-cholesterolemia. However, no significant linear association was observed. Based on the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE), the certainty of all evidence was rated as high.ConclusionThis meta-analysis revealed that the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D was inversely related to odds of abnormal serum triglycerides and HDL-c in children and adolescents. Increasing serum vitamin D from 35 nmol/L to 55 nmol/L was associated with a decreasing trend in the odds of abnormal serum triglycerides, HDL-c, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and total cholesterol in children.Systematic Review RegistrationPROSPERO registration no. 42023400787.

Influence of Smoking and Controlled Medical Conditions on the Risks of Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion in South Korea: A Population-Based Study

PURPOSETo evaluate the effect of controlled medical conditions and risk of lifetime smoking history on the prevalence of branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) based on the Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey (KNHANES) database from 2017-2021.METHODSThe study population consisted of individuals aged ≥ 40 years who had completed ophthalmological questionnaires, underwent comprehensive ophthalmological examinations, and had at least one good-quality readable fundus photograph. Age, sex, hypertension status, diabetes status, dyslipidemia status, body mass index status, a history of chronic kidney disease (CKD), a lifetime smoking history of ≥ 100 cigarettes, and glaucoma were subjected to univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses.RESULTSThe estimated prevalence (± standard error) of RVO was 0.5% (±0.1%). Significant risk factors were one-year increase in age, female sex, hypertension (stage 1, controlled, uncontrolled, and undiagnosed hypertension), underweight, pre-obesity, history of CKD, lifetime smoking history of ≥ 100 cigarettes, and glaucoma. Controlled diabetes decreased the risk of BRVO by 55% (odds ratio [OR] = 0.45, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.22-0.89, p = 0.022) and controlled hyper-high-density-lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterolemia decreased the risk by 69% (OR = 0.31, 95% CI = 0.13-0.76, p = 0.010).CONCLUSIONThis study, for the first time, reported the association between lifetime smoking history of ≥ 100 cigarettes and BRVO in Korea. The risk of BRVO was lower in participants with controlled diabetes and hypo-HDL-cholesterolemia.

Prevalence and Characteristics of Dyslipidemia in a Hospital in Madagascar

Introduction Dyslipidemia is a major risk factor for atherosclerosis and is included in the metabolic syndrome. Data on dyslipidemia are still lacking in some parts of Africa. Our objectives were to report the prevalence of dyslipidemia and to describe the lipid profile of patients in a hospital in Madagascar. Materials and methods This was a descriptive cross-sectional study of patients admitted to the medical departments of Mahavoky Atsimo Hospital in Mahajanga, Madagascar, and followed for a period of 15 months. To be eligible, patients had to be over 18 years of age, have a lipid panel including total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, and LDL cholesterol, and agree to participate in the study. Results Of the 384 patients included in the study, 262 patients (68.23%) had dyslipidemia. The prevalence of dyslipidemia was 61.45% (n = 102) in men and 73.39% (n = 160) in women. In patients older than 65 years, the prevalence was 70.64% (n = 77). The different types of dyslipidemia were distributed as follows: hypercholesterolemia (24.22%, n = 93), hypo-HDL cholesterolemia (22.4%, n = 86), mixed hyperlipidemia (7.81%, n = 30), hyper-LDL cholesterolemia (7.29%, n = 28), and hypertriglyceridemia (6.51%, n = 25). Female gender (p = 0.013), diabetes mellitus (p = 0.007), and morbid obesity (p = 0.036) were associated with dyslipidemia. Conclusion The prevalence of dyslipidemia was high. Pure hypercholesterolemia and hypo-HDL-c were the most common types. Female gender, diabetes mellitus, and morbid obesity were associated with dyslipidemia. Prevention and treatment programs are essential to reduce the prevalence of dyslipidemia and the risk of cardiovascular events in low-income countries.
