It is often observed that patients following hip surgery have a hard time with rehabilitation, as patients commonly lose muscle mass and strength around the surgical site. The goal of this study is to learn if giving patients testosterone around their hip surgery can prevent them from losing muscle mass, as well as to see if it will improve their outcomes after surgery. The main question this study aims to answer is: Will perioperative testosterone administration increase lean mass in addition to improving functional and clinical patient reported outcomes greater than placebo?
Researchers will compare patients who were administered testosterone to standard of care (no administration of testosterone) to see if there is a difference in their recovery and outcomes.
Participants will be given either testosterone or saline for eight weeks beginning two weeks prior to surgery. Participants will have to answer questionnaires on how they are doing, as well as will do other testing during this time.

Gold nanostars-driven SERS biosensors for fingerprinting detection and quantitative profiling of anabolic steroids

Anabolic agents, synthetic derivatives of androgenic hormones, promote protein synthesis while inhibiting degradation, thereby enhancing muscle mass and strength. These properties drive their illicit use as performance-enhancing drugs in sports, despite severe health risks including dependency and life-threatening pathologies. Consequently, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibits their use. This study presents a highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection platform utilizing gold nanostars (GNS) for identifying four anabolic agents. Synthesized via a seed-mediated growth method, the GNS substrate exploits its multibranched morphology to generate localized electromagnetic field amplification, achieving exceptional SERS enhancement. Detection limits reached 4.47 × 10^-8 M for nandrolone, 7.59 × 10^-8 M for trenbolone, 8.71 × 10^-8 M for methandrostenolone, and 1.55 × 10^-7 M for stanozolol, marking a 10- to 100-fold sensitivity improvement over conventional methods. The label-free, rapid analysis capability of this GNS-SERS platform underscores its potential for anti-doping enforcement and clinical toxicology applications.

The aroma evolution in lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn.) seed juice: A comprehensive analysis of processing and low-temperature storage effects

Lotus seed juice has significant potential in the plant-based beverage market owing to its distinctive flavor. However, its sensory quality is significantly influenced by processing and storage conditions. This study examined the effects and underlying mechanisms of fresh squeezing, sterilization, and refrigeration at 4 °C (for 1-6 months) on the aroma profile of lotus seed juice using an electronic nose, gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS), and non-targeted metabolomics. Sterilization processes resulted in vanilla, mint, and ammonia-like flavors due to the accumulation of hexanal, pentanal, and pyrrolidine. One month of refrigeration enhanced fruity and minty flavors, attributed to increased acetone and 6-ethyl acetate-D from fatty acid oxidation and esterification, respectively. However, prolonged refrigeration (six months) introduced undesirable alcoholic and pungent off-flavors caused by slow oxidative degradation (such as 2-propanol and 1-hydroxy-2-propanone). These findings provide valuable insights for improving the preservation methods and quality control strategies for plant-based beverages.

Exercise ameliorates cardiac injury induced by nandrolone decanoate through downregulation of osteopontin and mTOR expressions

Nandrolone-decanoate (NA), a synthetic anabolic steroid, negatively impacts cardiac function. While exercise is known to benefit cardiovascular health, its effects on individuals misusing anabolic steroids require further study. Osteopontin (OPN) and mammalian target of rapamycin (m-TOR) are crucial in inflammation-related cardiovascular diseases and can be influenced by exercise, though results are inconclusive. This study aims to examine how exercise affects NA's cardiac adverse effects and the potential role of OPN and m-TOR. The study involved 52 male rats divided into four groups: control, exercise-only, NA-treated (15 mg/kg/day S.C for 8 W), and combined exercise and NA treatment. Researchers measured blood pressure, heart rate (HR), serum cardiac enzymes, CRP, IL-1B, IL-6, Brain Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) and conducted macro and micromorphological assessments. Additionally, immunohistochemical analysis of cardiac OPN and mTOR was performed. The NA-treated group showed significant increases in blood pressure, HR, weight, and cardiac enzymes compared to the control group. Exercise significantly improved these parameters in the combined exercise and NA treatment group, except for blood pressure. All groups exhibited an increase in cardiac weight relative to the control. The NA-treated group displayed marked hyaline degeneration and necrosis in cardiac tissues, with increased cell diameter and excess collagen deposition, which was less severe in the combined exercise (EX) and NA treatment group. NA treatment significantly elevated inflammatory mediators and the area percentage of OPN and m-TOR expression. These markers were significantly reduced in the combined exercise and NA treatment group. BNP was remarkably raised in EX+NA group compared to all other groups. Exercise mitigated NA-induced cardiac damage by reducing inflammation, possibly through the downregulation of cardiac OPN and m-TOR expression.

In a concerning development, 196 drug samples have failed quality tests conducted by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), with one sample flagged as spurious. The spurious drug, a Nandrolone Decanoate injection marketed under the name Deca-Durabolin, was found to be manufactured by an unauthorized entity using a brand name owned by another company. The Union Health Ministry clarified that the sample was collected from Bihar and failed due to issues with its identification and assay parameters. Deca-Durabolin, an anabolic steroid widely used for treating conditions like osteoporosis and anemia, is marketed in India by Zydus Healthcare, following its acquisition of the brand from Merck in 2016. Of the 196 samples classified as “Not of Standard Quality” (NSQ), 60 were flagged by central laboratories, while 136 samples were identified by state laboratories. These include commonly used drugs such as Nimesulide tablets, Paracetamol tablets, and Cefpodoxime Proxetil tablets, manufactured by various pharmaceutical firms. The ministry emphasized that these failures are specific to the tested batches and do not indicate risks associated with other batches of the same drug. According to a note from the Union Health Ministry , the spurious sample was picked from Bihar and “is manufactured by an unauthorized manufacturer using the brand name owned by another company.” In its alert, the CDSCO specified that the tested sample failed due to issues with the “Identification and Assay of Nandrolone Decanoate .” In India, “Deca-Durabolin 50 mg” is marketed by Ahmedabad-based Zydus Healthcare, following its acquisition of the brand from MSD (Merck Sharp & Dohme) in December 2016. The matter is currently under investigation, and the purported spurious drug is subject to the outcome of the inquiry. The identification of drug samples as NSQ is based on the failure of the sample to meet one or more specified quality parameters. The term NSQ is defined under Section 16(1)(a) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
