This two-arm, double-blind randomized clinical trial will recruit 172 generally healthy, low-risk pregnant individuals aged 19-42 years living in Vancouver, Canada. Participants will be randomized to receive one of two forms of iron (ferrous fumarate or ferrous bisglycinate) in addition to a prenatal multivitamin (without iron) daily during their pregnancy until delivery, with optional continuation until
4 weeks postpartum for breastmilk sample collection. Blood samples will be taken at baseline (13-25 weeks gestation) and follow-up (35-37 weeks gestation) to assess how different forms of iron impact body iron stores. Stool samples will be obtained within 1 week of both baseline and follow-up visits to assess changes in gut microbiome composition. This research will inform more specific guidelines for optimal iron supplementation practices for the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency for both mother and baby.

Is Iron Supplementation Harmful in Populations Where Iron Deficiency is Not the Cause of Anemia? A 12 Week Randomized Controlled Trial in Cambodia

In 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) set a global policy recommending daily oral iron supplementation (60 mg iron) for 12 weeks for all women living in countries where anemia prevalence is >40%, such as in Cambodia. However, recent studies have shown the prevalence of iron deficiency to be low in Cambodian women and that supplementation would likely only benefit
10% of women.
Iron supplementation may be harmful in women with genetic blood disorders (e.g. thalassemia), which are common in Cambodia, as these individuals are already at an increased risk of iron overload. The risks are made greater by the fact that iron absorption from most common form of supplementation, ferrous sulfate, is low. Typically less than 20% is absorbed in the gut; the remaining 80% passes unabsorbed into the colon where it can increase the risk of pathogen growth and gut inflammation. Alternatively, ferrous bisglycinate is a newer supplemental form of iron. This amino acid chelate has 2-4x higher bioavailability than ferrous sulfate and is associated with fewer GI side-effects.
In view of WHO policy and risks of supplementation, there is a need to determine the potential for harm, and if novel forms of iron supplements are safer.

Manganese(II) Porphyrin and Cumyl Hydroperoxide: An Efficient Catalyst for Aryl‐Pentazole C−N Bond Cleavage

Abstract:

The selective cleavage of C−N bonds in N‐containing compounds holds significant research value in organic synthesis, particularly for the synthesis of promising polynitrogen species. For instance, the discovery of the cyclo‐pentazolate (cyclo‐N5−) anion in 2017 as a result of cleavage of the C−N bond has sparked interest within the field of high energy density materials. However, previous methods using ferrous glycinate and m‐chloroperoxybenzoic acid generated the cyclo‐N5− anion in a low yield of 19.5 % after 24 hours, and the mechanism remained unclear. In this study, we developed an efficient catalytic system comprising Mn (II) tetraphenylporphyrin and cumyl hydroperoxide. This system enables the cyclo‐N5− anion to be produced from 3,5‐dimethyl‐4‐hydroxyphenylpentazole in 35.4 % yield in 4 hours. Characterization of Mn(IV)‐oxo porphyrins, ⋅CH3, and ⋅C8H8ON5 radicals provides evidence for the mechanism whereby the cyclo‐N5− anion forms. Our study underscores the competitive potential of radical‐initiated selective C−N bonds cleavage in N‐arylazoles and opens avenues for further exploration in this field.

Effect of dietary iron sources on Cyprinus carpio var. specularis and Lactuca sativa var. ramosa hort in aquaponic system

In order to explore the dietary iron sources on Cyprinus carpio (12.54 ± 1.65 g) and Lactuca sativa in aquaponic system, three semi-purified diets with iron contents of around 120 mg/kg were prepared: S-120 (ferrous sulfate); C-120 (ferrous citrate); and G-120 (ferrous glycinate).The results of 2 mo trail showed that: (1) The final weight and weight gain of juvenile mirror carp in the C-120 and G-120 group showed a significant increase compared to those in the S-120 group (P < 0.05), and the feed conversion ratio in G-120 group significantly lower than the S-120 group (P < 0.05). (2) The fish muscle and whole-body iron content in the S-120 group were significantly lower than that in the C-120 group and G-120 group (P < 0.05). (3) The ∑n-3PUFA (mainly C22:6n-3) content of fish muscle in G-120 group were significantly higher than S-120 and C120 group (P < 0.05). (4) The liver superoxide dismutase activities in the G-120 and C-120 groups were significantly higher than the S-120 group (P < 0.05).The blood hematocrit level in the C-120 group was significantly higher than that in the S-120 group (P < 0.05). (5) The height, number of leaves, yield and chlorophyll of lettuce in the S-120 group were significantly higher compared to the G-120 group (P < 0.05). (6) The nitrogen utilization of fish in G-120 and C-120 groups was significantly higher than that in S-120 group (P < 0.05), and the nitrogen utilization of vegetables in S-120 and C-120 groups was significantly higher than that in G-120 group (P < 0.05).The total nitrogen utilization rate of S-120 group was higher than that of G-120 and C-120 groups (P < 0.05).Therefore, we suggested to use ferrous citrate as the iron source in feed of mirror carp to enhance the yield of fish and vegetables in the aquaponic system.

Structural changes and in vitro bioaccessibility of CPP-febisgly complexes: Dependence on iron load

The effect of casein phosphopeptides (CPP) and ferrous bisglycinate (FebisGly) at different ratios (1:20, 1:10, and 1:5 w/w) on iron supplementation was investigated. The in vitro bioaccessibility, structural changes, antioxidant activity, and the effect of absorption inhibitors were also explored. The results demonstrated that CPP enhanced the bioaccessibility of FebisGly by 68.72 % ± 0.18 % and increased the β-sheet content from 21.60 % ± 0.23 % to 67.92 % ± 0.12 %, forming a stable secondary structure. The particle size distribution (PSD) and rheological analyses indicated that CPP significantly contributed to the formation of chelated irons, resulting in a uniform PSD and enhanced viscoelasticity. Moreover, it prolonged the gastric emptying time, reducing gastric irritation further. The carboxyl and amino groups in the CPP molecules participated in chelation reaction, improved the antioxidant activity, and competed with phytic acid, tannic acid, and cellulose for iron. Overall, these results laid a foundation for developing novel iron supplementation strategies.
