One challenge faced by dental professionals is that, unlike natural tooth structure, composite restorations do not lighten when exposed to bleaching agents. As a result, functional restorations may need replacement after bleaching to match the newly whitened teeth. However, replacing a composite restoration can lead to unnecessary removal of tooth structure, potentially weakening the tooth and increasing its susceptibility to further iatrogenic damage. This study will investigate the ability of Omnichroma restorations to shade-match tooth structure after bleaching.
The null hypotheses will be:
1. Single-shade RBC will not exhibit similar shade and optical behavior to conventional RBC across all anterior restorations following bleaching.
2. Patient satisfaction regarding color blending between the restoration and tooth structure will not differ according to the type of material used.
3. Dentist satisfaction regarding color blending between the restoration and tooth structure will not differ according to the type of material used.

Decarboxylase mediated oxalic acid metabolism is important to antioxidation and detoxification rather than pathogenicity in Magnaporthe oryzae

Oxalic acid (OA), an essential pathogenic factor, has been identified in several plant pathogens, and researchers are currently pursuing studies on interference with OA metabolism as a treatment for related diseases. However, the metabolic route in Magnaporthe oryzae remains unknown. In this study, we describe D-erythroascorbic acid-mediated OA synthesis and its metabolic and clearance pathways in rice blast fungus. By knocking out the D-arabino-1,4-lactone oxidase gene (Moalo1), one-third of oxalic acid remained in M. oryzae, indicating a main pathway for oxalic acid production. M. oryzae OxdC (MoOxdC) is an oxalate decarboxylase that appears to play a role in relieving oxalic acid toxicity. Loss of Mooxdc does not affect mycelial growth, conidiophore development, or appressorium formation in M. oryzae; however, the antioxidant and pathogenic abilities of the mutant were enhanced. This is owing to Mooxdc deletion upregulated a series of OA metabolic genes, including the oxalate oxidase gene (Mooxo) and Moalo1, as well as both OA transporter genes. Simultaneously, as feedback to the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, the decrease of formic acid in ΔMooxdc leads to the reduction of acetyl-CoA content, and two genes involved in the β-oxidation of fatty acids were also upregulated, which enhanced the fatty acid metabolism of the ΔMooxdc. Overall, this work reveals the role of OA in M. oryzae. We found that OA metabolism was mainly involved in the growth and development of M. oryzae, OA as a byproduct of D-erythroascorbic acid after removing H₂O₂, the OA-associated pathway ensures the TCA process and ATP supply.

Expression characteristics of CsESA1 in citrus and analysis of its interacting protein

The most damaging disease affecting citrus globally is Huanglongbing (HLB), primarily attributed to the infection by 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' (CaLas). Based on comparative transcriptome data, two cellulose synthase (CESA) genes responsive to CaLas infection induction were screened, and one gene cloned with higher differential expression level was selected and named CsCESA1. we verified the interaction between CsCESA1 and citrus exopolysaccharide 2 (CsEPS2) proteins. Subcellular localization in tobacco indicated that both CsCESA1 and CsEPS2 proteins are primarily located in the nucleus and cytoplasm. RT-qPCR analysis indicated that the expression levels of CsCESA1 and CsEPS2 were associated with variety tolerance, tissue site, and symptom development. Furthermore, we generated CsCESA1 and CsEPS2 silencing plants and obtained CsCESA1 and CsEPS2 silencing and overexpressing hairy roots. The analysis of hormone content and gene expression also showed that CsCESA1 and CsEPS2 are involved in transcriptional regulation of genes involved in systemic acquired resistance (SAR) response. In conclusion, our results suggested that CsCESA1 and CsEPS2 could serve as potential resistance genes for HLB disease, offering insights into the plant's defense mechanisms against HLB.

This study investigates the potential of the multi-metal tolerant bacterium Bacillus sp.S3 to remediate Pb- and Cu-contaminated soils while enhancing the growth of pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.).Our findings demonstrate that inoculation with Bacillus sp.S3 significantly increased pakchoi biomass, leaf chlorophyll content, and antioxidant levels, while effectively reducing oxidative stress indicators.Addnl, Bacillus sp.S3 markedly improved soil enzyme activities and enhanced Pb immobilization in the soil, thereby limiting the uptake of Pb and Cu in pakchoi leaves.These results underscore the ability of Bacillus sp.S3 to simultaneously mitigate heavy metal toxicity, support plant growth, and restore soil health, offering a sustainable solution for the remediation of metal-polluted soils and the production of safer crops.

Treating a Poisoned Pet at Home Can Still Require Medical Assistance MINNEAPOLIS, April 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Every pet owner knows that something dropped on the floor, or left on a counter, can be fair game for the family pet to eat, but that's not the only way animals get into a potentially toxic situation. Pets are also accidentally given the wrong medication, or they get into food that is perfectly healthy for humans, but toxic to pets. When an item ingested is toxic to your furry or feathered family member, the first thought might be to induce vomiting immediately, but the toxicology experts at Pet Poison Helpline recommend calling a medical professional first. "Many pets are motivated by food, especially dogs, so when something is dropped or left on the floor, they assume it is edible" said Dr. Renee Schmid, a senior veterinary toxicologist and director of Veterinary Medicine at Pet Poison Helpline. "We've had many pet owners who call us because they've dropped or given their pet the wrong medication. Dogs are also curious by nature, and explore new things with their mouths, often leading to unfortunate ingestions. If your pet does have an accidental poisoning, you may cause more harm by inducing vomiting on your own." In a recent case, one pet owner accidentally gave her dog her human cancer medication. As soon as she realized what had happened, she forced the dog to drink a dangerous amount of hydrogen peroxide. The cancer pill was retrieved, but the hydrogen peroxide caused the dog to continue vomiting and stop eating. It did significant damage to the dog's gastrointestinal (GI) system. Fortunately, the dog was treated with medication to help as the stomach recovered and has returned to full health. "Hydrogen peroxide, when used properly, can be very effective at inducing vomiting in dogs only," explained Dr. Schmid. "If given in too great a quantity, however, it can cause significant damage to the esophagus, stomach and intestinal tract." In certain situations, dogs are the only animal that may be able to have vomiting attempted at home with hydrogen peroxide. Cats, birds, and other species should never have vomiting attempted at home due to high risks of potentially fatal consequences. Negative effects may also occur if vomiting is attempted at home in dogs, which makes it important to never attempt without consulting a veterinarian or Pet Poison Helpline. In another case, a Sheltie in Pennsylvania gobbled up some raisins before his owner could stop him. Grapes, raisins and currants are toxic to dogs. Ingestion of even a small amount of these foods can result in severe, acute kidney failure. "Fortunately, the owner called Pet Poison Helpline before trying to induce vomiting at home," Dr. Schmid said. "We were able to walk him through the process of administering the correct amount of hydrogen peroxide, and he was able to safely retrieve the raisins before they caused any harm." This treatment was potentially lifesaving for the pet and avoided the need for aggressive medical care. Steris reaches deal to settle ethylene oxide cases in Illinois

Steris said this month that its Isomedix subsidiary reached a deal with confidential settlements to resolve personal injury claims from people who said they were harmed by a ethylene oxide (EtO) sterilization facility in Illinois. Isomedix will pay up to $48.15 million to settle the claims, according to a securities filing, which said “the settlement agreements are expected to resolve substantially all of the claims for personal injury related to ethylene oxide (“EO”) that are currently pending in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois.” Steris said it plans to record a charge for the settlement for fiscal 2025 (which ends March 31), and that the charge won’t be included in the company’s adjusted earnings measures for fiscal 2025. The company said the deals are not “an admission of liability or that emissions from the Waukegan, Illinois facility ever posed a safety hazard to the people who live or work in the surrounding areas.” Previously: EPA flags high-cancer-risk EtO sterilization facilities across the country The first case went before a jury last year in a trial that started in December and ended in January with a mistrial. (The Cook County Record has more details about that first case.)
