Diet is closely related to exercise performance. To improve athletes' performance and manage their condition, it is important to get sufficient energy and various nutrients. Thus, it is necessary that athletes understand their nutritional intake status to improve performance and maintain health. This study aimed to explore the nutritional intake status of college baseball players using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Furthermore, the characteristics of their nutritional intake status with respect to athletic performance were evaluated. The result of this studyprovide an opportunity for many under-developed college athletes with irregular lifestyles to recognize and improve their nutritional problems.

METHODS:

In October 2022, a questionnaire survey of 116 male members of a college baseball club was conducted. Of whom, 100 (94.3%) members responded to the survey and 92 (92.0%) provided valid responses. The survey items included basic characteristics such as college grade and type of living arrangement, and information on living conditions, e.g. whether the participant ate breakfast. Nutritional intake was evaluated using the FFQ. Players were divided into the first (regular players in official games), second (bench players in official games), third (players who may join the second or higher team in the future), and fourth teams (players who do not belong to the first to third teams); these categories were used as a marker of performance level. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to analyze the association between the performance levels of baseball players and the intake of each nutrient and food group obtained by the FFQ. For items that showed a significant association, inter-group comparison was performed using the Dunn-Bonferroni method.

RESULTS:

Carbohydrate intake was greater in the second team compared with the third and fourth teams; saturated and monounsaturated fatty acid intake was higher in the third team compared with the fourth team. Calcium, zinc, copper, manganese, insoluble dietary fiber, iodine, and molybdenum intake was higher in the second team compared with the fourth team. Intake of grains, sugar, dairy, and total energy was significantly higher in the second team compared with the fourth team. However, the protein intake ratio was significantly lower in the second team compared with the fourth team. Overall, energy deficiency and associated deficiencies in protein, fat, and carbohydrate were observed, in addition to dietary fiber and calcium deficiencies. The intake of several food groups appeared inadequate, such as potatoes, beans, vegetables, fruits, eggs, milk, and fats.

CONCLUSIONS:

The study showed deficiencies in the amount of energy and nutrients such as protein, fat, and carbohydrate in college baseball players. Differences in the intake of carbohydrate, calcium, and insoluble dietary fiber among different performance levels were observed, with significantly higher intake of carbohydrate, calcium, and insoluble dietary fiber in the second team. Implementing organized and strategic remedial measures and athletes' identification of nutritional problems are vital to overcome nutritional and energy deficiencies. This study provides useful information for the development of strategies to support nutritional intake in college baseball players.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW:

Nutraceuticals are not regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration, so a careful literature review is essential to make clinical decisions. Riboflavin or vitamin B2 can be recommended for migraine prevention in adults, but pediatric use is not proven. Adverse events are minimal. Coenzyme Q10 has Level C evidence for migraine prevention and low adverse events. Feverfew may be effective for migraine prevention, but the absence of clear safety studies, the differences in doses and characteristics of dried leaf preparations, and the myriad of feverfew cellular effects suggest caution in recommendation for use. Magnesium is recommended for migraine prevention and intravenous acute use, with the potential for generally mild gastrointestinal tolerability adverse events. Melatonin has very low certainty for evidence of efficacy, and is weakly recommended in those with sleep problems. However, purity of US sold melatonin is very poor. Butterbur or petasites preparations have strong evidence for efficacy and concern for hepatotoxicity. Root-Specific Expression of Anti-Apoptotic Gene AtBAG4 for Engineering Fusarium Wilt Resistance in Banana cv. Rasthali

Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) is a soil-borne pathogen that severely limits banana yields globally.In the present study, the Rasthali (AAB) banana cultivar was transformed with the Arabidopsis thaliana BAG4 gene, driven by a root-specific promoter, to modulate cell death pathways and induce resistance against the fungal pathogen.Stable transgenic plants were developed by transforming embryogenic cells derived from immature male floral buds.Integration and expression of the gene cassette in transformants were confirmed by Southern blotting and real-time PCR, resp.Stable transgenic banana lines were selected based on their copy number and vigorous growth.The root challenge bioassay of the selected lines showed a vascular discoloration index (VDI) ranging from 8 to 51%, compared to untransformed bananas, which exhibited a 97% VDI.Lines demonstrating tolerance were further micro-propagated for detailed anal.The enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase and peroxidase were higher in transformed lines than control plants.Addnl., the TUNEL assay of the stable transformant line 168 exhibited reduced apoptotic-like features in the roots post-Foc infection.The results indicated that AtBAG4 transgenic Rasthali plants exhibited tolerance to Foc (Race 1) by inhibiting cell death.Therefore, AtBAG4 gene-mediated tolerance in banana cv.Rasthali offers a promising and sustainable approach for the integrated management of Fusarium wilt in bananas.

Global Study Reveals Widespread Micronutrient Deficiencies

TUESDAY, Sept. 3, 2024 -- More than 5 billion people globally do not consume enough iodine, vitamin E, and calcium, according to a study published online Aug. 29 in The Lancet Global Health . Simone Passarelli, Ph.D., from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, and colleagues estimated micronutrient intake using a novel approach accounting for the shape of a population's nutrient intake distribution, based on dietary intake data from 31 countries. These distributions were applied to data for 185 countries for 34 age-sex groups to estimate the prevalence of nutrient intakes for 99.3 percent of the global population. The researchers found that more than 5 billion people do not consume enough iodine, vitamin E, and calcium (68, 67, and 66 percent of the global population, respectively). More than 4 billion people do not consume enough iron, riboflavin, folate, and vitamin C (65, 55, 54, and 53 percent, respectively). Within the same country and age groups, estimated inadequate intakes were higher for women with regards to iodine, vitamin B 12 , iron, and selenium, and for men with regards to magnesium, vitamin B 6 , zinc, vitamin C, vitamin A, thiamin, and niacin. "We hope this analysis sheds light on crucial nutrition challenges for locations without the necessary means to collect primary data, and improves understanding of global micronutrient inadequacy so that public health interventions can more effectively address deficiencies," the authors write. Billions of the World's People Deficient in Essential Micronutrients

FRIDAY, Aug. 30, 2024 -- More than half of people around the world aren’t getting enough micronutrients essential to human health, including calcium, iron and vitamins C and E, a new study says. These deficiencies are contributing to global malnutrition, as well as health problems like blindness, increased vulnerability to infections, and pregnancy complications, researchers said in The Lancet Global Health . “These results are alarming,” researcher Ty Beal , a senior technical specialist at the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, said in a news release. “Most people — even more than previously thought, across all regions and countries of all incomes — are not consuming enough of multiple essential micronutrients,” Beal said. “These gaps compromise health outcomes and limit human potential on a global scale.” For the study, researchers combined data from several sources to compare the nutritional intake of people in 185 countries. The team specifically assessed intake of 15 vitamins and minerals -- calcium, iodine, iron, riboflavin, folate, zinc, magnesium, selenium, thiamin, niacin, and vitamins A, B6 , B12, C and E. Researchers found widespread inadequate intake of iodine (68% of the world's population); vitamin E (67%); calcium (66%); and iron (65%). More than half of people consume inadequate levels of riboflavin, folate, and vitamins C and B6, researchers added. Intake of niacin was closest to sufficient, with 22% of people worldwide consuming too little, followed by thiamin (30%) and selenium (37%). “The public health challenge facing us is immense, but practitioners and policymakers have the opportunity to identify the most effective dietary interventions and target them to the populations most in need,” senior author Christopher Golden , associate professor of nutrition and planetary health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, said in a news release. Women were more likely than men to get too little iodine, vitamin B12, iron and selenium, results indicate. On the other hand, men weren't getting enough niacin, thiamin, zinc, magnesium, and vitamins A, C, and B6 compared to women, researchers said. Children and young adults 10 to 30 were most prone to low calcium intake, especially in South and East Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
