Survey of nutritional intake status in college baseball players

BACKGROUND:

Diet is closely related to exercise performance. To improve athletes' performance and manage their condition, it is important to get sufficient energy and various nutrients. Thus, it is necessary that athletes understand their nutritional intake status to improve performance and maintain health. This study aimed to explore the nutritional intake status of college baseball players using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Furthermore, the characteristics of their nutritional intake status with respect to athletic performance were evaluated. The result of this studyprovide an opportunity for many under-developed college athletes with irregular lifestyles to recognize and improve their nutritional problems.

METHODS:

In October 2022, a questionnaire survey of 116 male members of a college baseball club was conducted. Of whom, 100 (94.3%) members responded to the survey and 92 (92.0%) provided valid responses. The survey items included basic characteristics such as college grade and type of living arrangement, and information on living conditions, e.g. whether the participant ate breakfast. Nutritional intake was evaluated using the FFQ. Players were divided into the first (regular players in official games), second (bench players in official games), third (players who may join the second or higher team in the future), and fourth teams (players who do not belong to the first to third teams); these categories were used as a marker of performance level. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to analyze the association between the performance levels of baseball players and the intake of each nutrient and food group obtained by the FFQ. For items that showed a significant association, inter-group comparison was performed using the Dunn-Bonferroni method.

RESULTS:

Carbohydrate intake was greater in the second team compared with the third and fourth teams; saturated and monounsaturated fatty acid intake was higher in the third team compared with the fourth team. Calcium, zinc, copper, manganese, insoluble dietary fiber, iodine, and molybdenum intake was higher in the second team compared with the fourth team. Intake of grains, sugar, dairy, and total energy was significantly higher in the second team compared with the fourth team. However, the protein intake ratio was significantly lower in the second team compared with the fourth team. Overall, energy deficiency and associated deficiencies in protein, fat, and carbohydrate were observed, in addition to dietary fiber and calcium deficiencies. The intake of several food groups appeared inadequate, such as potatoes, beans, vegetables, fruits, eggs, milk, and fats.

CONCLUSIONS:

The study showed deficiencies in the amount of energy and nutrients such as protein, fat, and carbohydrate in college baseball players. Differences in the intake of carbohydrate, calcium, and insoluble dietary fiber among different performance levels were observed, with significantly higher intake of carbohydrate, calcium, and insoluble dietary fiber in the second team. Implementing organized and strategic remedial measures and athletes' identification of nutritional problems are vital to overcome nutritional and energy deficiencies. This study provides useful information for the development of strategies to support nutritional intake in college baseball players.

Assessing the relationship between serum vitamin A, C, E, D, and B12 levels and preeclampsia

OBJECTIVE:

Micronutrients play an important role in maintaining physiological functions while preventing complications associated with pregnancy. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the possible associations between vitamins A, C, D, E, B12, and preeclampsia using a retrospective analytical approach.

METHODS:

This retrospective study enrolled pregnant women who attended routine antenatal checkups between January 2021 and January 2023 at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University. One thousand pregnant women aged 18-50 years whose serum vitamin assessments were conducted during 12-20 weeks of gestation were enrolled. Inclusion criteria: women with preeclampsia, singleton pregnancies, and no previous history of hypertension or preeclampsia. Exclusion criteria: metabolic disorders, multiple pregnancies, and other specified exclusions. Approval of the hospital's ethics committee; all participants gave written informed consent. Demographic data analyzed include age, BMI, and gestational age, showing no significant differences in age span between groups (p > .05).

RESULTS:

In the preeclampsia group, the serum level of vitamin A stands at 1.08 ± 0.29 μmol/L, which is lower than the control group of 1.13 ± 0.31 μmol/L (p < .05). Mean serum levels of vitamin C in preeclampsia are 51.81 ± 13.15 μmol/L, which was lower than in the control group, where it was 59.67 ± 16.40 μmol/L (p < .05). The mean serum vitamin B12 level in preeclampsia is 158.28 ± 46.77 pmol/L, lower than the 165.61 ± 40.99 pmol in the control group (p < .05). The two groups had no significant difference in serum vitamin E and vitamin D levels (p > .05).

CONCLUSION:

Serum vitamins A, C, and B12 at 12 to 20 weeks of pregnancy might be important predisposing factors for preeclampsia. They can be used as indicators of preeclampsia severity and offer clinical detection even before the patient presents with symptoms.

RFK Jr. promotes measles vaccine as Texas outbreak continues

Both Merck and GSK make measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccines in the U.S., crucial offerings as a measles outbreak in Texas continues. Following a second measles-related death in Texas, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., head of the federal Department of Health and Human Services, endorsed the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine in a lengthy social media post—seemingly reversing some of his previous comments about vaccines and the outbreak.“The most effective way to prevent the spread of measles is the MMR vaccine,” RFK Jr. wrote on the social media website X on April 6. The company is focused on ensuring the availability of its vaccine for “those who need it most,” and it is “closely monitoring the situation” including outbreak trends and the potential demand for its MMR vaccine.“Based upon current known demand, there is an adequate supply of Merck’s M-M-R II vaccine to support appropriate vaccination of eligible patients,” the company representative said. “Adherence to recommended pediatric vaccination schedules and regular health visits is critical to protecting public health and mitigating outbreaks of these preventable diseases."Since the MMR vaccines were introduced, measles cases have substantially declined in the U.S. The latest outbreak has already resulted in more cases than the total reported in all of 2024, when 285 measles cases were documented. The measles spread hit a high in 2019 with 1,274 cases reported, but quickly quelled in 2020 with just 13, according to the CDC.For context, measles in the U.S. peaked at over 27,000 reported cases in 1990 before the widespread implementation of MMR vaccine. Two doses of the MMR vaccine are proven to be 97% effective against measles. Still, measles vaccination rates for young children are steadily decreasing, according to a recent report by Truveta Research. RFK Jr. has previously held a questionable stance on the MMR vaccine, telling Fox News’ Sean Hannity in early March that the measles vaccine “wanes” for some people and that the measles infection itself offers “lifetime immunity.” He further noted that the MMR vaccine “causes deaths every year” and “all the illnesses that measles itself causes,” CNN reported from the Fox interview.According to the CDC, serious risks of MMR vaccination are rare. There is a “very remote chance” of the vaccine causing a severe allergic reaction, serious injury or death, the CDC points out.Along with promoting the MMR vaccine, RFK Jr. has touted alternative regimens that include aerosolized budesonite and clarithromycin. Hours after writing his recent X post, the health secretary also pointed to two “extraordinary healers” in a separate post who have “treated and health some 300 measles-stricken Mennonite children” using the alternative treatment. There is currently no FDA-approved treatment or cure for measles, but vitamin A has been recommended for treating severe cases.Merck’s family of measles vaccines includes a ProQuad shot, which lumps chicken pox (varicella) protection into an MMR vaccine (MMRV). The company’s MMRV vaccine franchise brought in $2.5 billion in 2024, reflecting sales slightly up from 2023.GSK also markets Priorix, another MMR vaccine. The drugmaker brought its offering to the U.S. in 2022 after introducing it years ago in Europe, adding a key option to the country’s MMR arsenal. Priorix and M-M-R II are both recommended by the CDC’s vaccine committee for routine vaccination.

RFK Jr. Touts Vaccine While at Funeral of Texas Girl Who Died of Measles

MONDAY, April 7, 2025 -- The death of a second child in a fast-growing U.S. measles outbreak brought the nation's top health official to Texas this weekend. U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. attended the funeral of an 8-year-old girl who died of lung failure caused by measles . She was unvaccinated and had no underlying health conditions, The New York Times reported. Kennedy spoke with the girl's family but not during Sunday's funeral. In a post on X, he said his aim was to console the families quietly and be with the community in its moment of grief. Then, Kennedy, a longtime vaccine skeptic, added: "The most effective way to prevent the spread of measles is the M.M.R. [measles, mumps, rubella] vaccine." He has previously touted vitamin A as a measles remedy, leading to concerns about inappropriate and unsafe use. More than 600 people in 21 states have been sickened during the current measles outbreak, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Many of those cases are among unvaccinated people — most of them children. Experts suspect the numbers are much higher because many cases go unreported, according to CNN . A Trump administration official told The New York Times the Texas child's cause of death is "still being looked at." Sen. The study will be conducted by a well-known vaccine skeptic. Dr. Paul Offit , director of the Vaccine Center at Philadelphia Children's Hospital, told CNN that Kennedy's response to the outbreak has been "abysmal." He cited Kennedy's history of decrying vaccines and minimizing measles' risks. "The disease has returned because a critical percentage have chosen not to vaccinate their children, in large part because of misinformation provided by people like RFK Jr.," he said. Measles was declared eradicated in the U.S. in 2000 — meaning that more than a year had passed without spread of the disease, according to the CDC . The current outbreak threatens that status.
