FLT-PET/CT vs FDG-PET/CT for Therapy Monitoring of Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma

A research study of a new method of visualizing internal organs called 18F-FLT PET/CT that yields better tracking of cancer treatment progress. PET/CT stands for positron emission tomography with low dose computed tomography and has been used for many years. 18F-FLT PET/CT uses a new tracer, fluorothymidine, which is taken up by cells that are actively proliferating or dividing such as cancer cells. We hope to learn whether this tracer is superior to the conventional tracer for monitoring treatment of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL).

Utilization of technologies in French language translation (FLT) education in Saudi Arabia: A quantitative survey study

The utilization of educational technologies has become a mainstream issue in recent years, particularly in the post-pandemic era. The need for technologies and the procedures for implementing them is, therefore, increasingly becoming a core subject and an interesting area of research in foreign language instruction. The present research aimed to explore the utilization of technology in teaching and learning FLT at Princess Nourah University in Saudi Arabia. The research adopted a quantitative survey study based on the data collected from 169 students using a 48-item questionnaire. The results showed that the most used technologies by students are FLT learning videos on YouTube, browsing electronic sites, and searching educational sites. The findings also revealed that the most common technologies used by teachers include e-mail, learning management systems, and gamification. The least used technologies were artificial intelligence, Boostlingo, and Kahoot, which are considered more relevant to FLT instruction [30]. For FLT students, the most challenging obstacles in utilizing technologies were a lack of training on using relevant technologies and limited electronic sites supporting FLT learning. Amongst the recommendations that the researcher highlighted based on these study findings include the fact that students must still utilize more innovative technology relevant to FLT learning, as most of this technology is considered common. All recommendations highlighted aim to develop technology-based FLT teaching and learning in the College of Languages at PNU. Effects of chemical composition of ambient PM2.5 measured in Seoul on potential health risks and generation of reactive oxygen species

This study assesses the health effects associated with the chemical species of ambient particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM_2.5) in Seoul, focusing on identifying key chemical constituents and their sources. We employed two approaches to estimate health risks: (1) evaluating carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks using IRIS (Integrated Risk Information System) data from the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), and (2) quantifying the generation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) following exposure to PM_2.5 in surrogate lung fluid (SLF). Our results show a significant impact on human health from certain elements (Cr, Ni, As, and Cd) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (DaeP, DahA, and BaP for carcinogenic risks; BaP and BeP for noncarcinogenic risks). Notably, Cr and BaP, which are influential in both risk assessment and ·OH generation, highlight their significant roles in human health impacts. However, other components (e.g., CPP, BaP, BghiP, BaA, CHR, PYR, FLT, Ca, Mg, and Cu), though contributors to ·OH generation, were not included in the EPA's health risk assessment, suggesting a need for a broader PM_2.5 compositional analysis to more accurately determine exposure concentrations and assess inhalation risks. These components predominantly originate from anthropogenic sources, such as combustion, vehicles, and industrial activities, underscoring the significant health implications of the pollutants emitted from these sources. The study concluded that focusing solely on the mass reduction of PM_2.5 may not suffice; a dual approach that reduces both mass concentration and chemical-specific health risks is imperative for effective public health protection.

History of organic pollution in montane lake Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia, inferred from a sediment core

In arid regions, montane lakes are valuable water sources and play important ecological roles. However, recent human-induced inputs of organic pollutants are threatening lake ecology in such regions and becoming a matter of great concern. To investigate pollutant histories and sources, we measured polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and n-alkanes in a dated sediment core that spans the last ∼350 years, from montane Lake Issyk-Kul (Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia). Results showed that organic pollutants were delivered to Lake Issyk-Kul in four stages and that their concentrations increased from Stage I (∼1670-1800 CE) to Stage IV (∼2000-2010 CE). Furthermore, we tracked the sources of sedimented PAHs using their ratios combined with n-alkanes data. Ratios of PAHs Ant/(Ant + Phe), Flt/(Flt + Pyr) and Bap/BghiP indicated that inputs during Stage II (∼1800-1970 CE) and Stage III (∼1970-2000 CE) came mainly from high-temperature combustion of coal and vehicle emissions. PAHs in Stage I and Stage IV, however, were mainly derived from low-temperature combustion and petrogenic sources. Diagnostic PAH ratios, combined with the natural n-alkane ratio (NAR＜0) and unresolved complex mixtures (UCM), showed that the sources of PAHs in Stage I were mainly from erosion of bedrock and partly influenced by forest wildfires, different from the source during Stage IV, which was mainly from refined petroleum caused by accidental spills. Our assessment of the contamination history of the lake indicates that toxicity risk to the waterbody from sediment PAHs is low, but recent discharges arising from traffic deserve attention.
