Effect of Sodium Thiosulfate on Nephrotoxicity of Cisplatin Intraperitoneal Heat-perfusion Chemotherapy: a Multi-center Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial.

Ovarian cancer is the most lethal malignancy of the female genital tract. Cytoreductive surgery combined with chemotherapy is the primary treatment for ovarian cancer, and radical tumor resection is an important means to improve the prognosis. However, even after complete tumor resection, 75% of patients with ovarian cancer still recur within 3 years after the initial treatment and eventually die from recurrence. In ovarian cancer, the lesions are located primarily in the peritoneal cavity. High-grade evidence demonstrates that the use of intraperitoneal hyperthermic chemotherapy (HIPEC) with cisplatin after cytoreductive surgery significantly improves the outcome in some patients with ovarian cancer. Currently, this is the only non-pharmacologic treatment that reduces both the risk of recurrence and death from ovarian cancer with a multi treatment. However, HIPEC with cisplatin can lead to acute kidney injury, and a serious complication that can seriously affect the short and long-term prognosis of patients. Sodium thiosulfate has previously been reported to reduce the incidence of acute kidney injury after HIPEC with cisplatin, but this finding has not been confirmed in a high-level study. Therefore, we propose a multi-center, prospective, open-label, randomized, controlled trial including 110 patients with ovarian cancer who received HIPEC with cisplatin, to evaluate whether sodium thiosulfate combined with hydration (55 patients in the trial group) can reduce the incidence of acute kidney injury after HIPEC with cisplatin compared with hydration alone (55 patients in the control group), and to provide high-level evidence for the rationale of using sodium thiosulfate for nephrotoxicity relief in cisplatin HIPEC.

A novel synchronous fluorescence spectrometry combined with fluorescence sensitization for the highly sensitive and simultaneous detection of enoxacin, ofloxacin and tetracycline hydrochloride residues in wastewater

The synergistic effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and Mg²⁺ could significantly enhance the fluorescence intensity of enoxacin (ENO) at λ_ex/λ_em = 269.2 nm/385.6 nm, ofloxacin (OFL) at λ_ex/λ_em = 290.8 nm/466.2 nm and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) at λ_ex/λ_em = 372.6 nm/514.8 nm. Moreover, when the wavelength difference (Δλ) was chosen 135 nm, the synchronous fluorescence spectra of the three antibiotic complexes could be well separated and the interference of the samples matrix were eliminated primely. Therefore, only one synchronous fluorescence scan was needed to simultaneously determine the three antibiotics. Based on these facts, a synchronous fluorescence spectrometry combining fluorescence sensitization for highly sensitive and selective determination of ENO, OFL and TCH residues in wastewater was developed for the first time. The experimental results showed that the concentrations of ENO, OFL and TCH in the range of 0.5-550 ng mL^-1, 1-1500 ng mL^-1 and 10-5500 ng mL^-1 showed a good linear relationship with fluorescence intensity. The limits of detection were 0.0599 ng mL^-1, 0.115 ng mL^-1 and 0.151 ng mL^-1, respectively. The recoveries of the actual sample were 87.50%-99.99 %, 93.00%-98.50 % and 85.70%-98.42 %, respectively. Overall, the novel synchronous fluorescence spectrometry established in the experiment has the advantages of high sensitivity, good selectivity, fast detection speed and high accuracy. It has been successfully applied to the detection of residual amounts of ENO, OFL and TCH in wastewater with satisfactory results.

Based on the dye/salts separation efficiency and membrane injury caused by serious pollution of dye/salts wastewater, this study constructed a 2D tight ultrafiltration membrane that could both solve the membrane injury problem and improve the dye/salts separation efficiency, the compatibility of good self-healing performance and penetration performance by 2D material magnesium-aluminum Layered double hydroxide (MgAl-LDH). The self-repairing of physical injury was achieved through the swelling effect of AMPS-PAN, this property was proved by permeate flux, the retention performance of salts in dye/salts solution, the comparison of scanning electron microscope (SEM), and the mechanical strength after physical injury. The healing of chemical injury occured through the reaction of CC and polyethersulfone chain breakage, which was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), permeate flux, the retention performance of salts in dye/salts solution, and mechanical property. The high separation efficiency of dye/salts was achieved through 2D material MgAl-LDH, which was proved by separation selectivity ɑ. The compatibility of good self-healing performance and penetration performance was obtained by 2D material MgAl-LDH, which was proved by the penetration and self-healing performance. Morever, the membrane illustrated excellent both permeability and dye/sals separation efficiency, just like the permeate flux, the retention performance of sodium sulfate in methyl blue/sodium sulfate solution, the retention performance of Na₂SO₄ in methyl blue/Na₂SO₄ solution, the retention rate of methyl blue were 99.1 L/m²h, 12.5%, 7.9%, 97.7%, respectively. The results of pollution index and contact angle also proved that the membrane had anti-pollution performance.

Innovative approaches to suppress non-specific adsorption in molecularly imprinted polymers for sensing applications

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are synthetic antibodies developed to bind selectively with specific molecules. They function through a particular recognition process involving their cavities and functional groups. Nevertheless, functional groups located outside these cavities are the main cause of non-specific molecule binding, thus reducing the effectiveness of MIPs in sensing applications. This work focused on enhancing the selectivity and performance of MIPs through electrostatic modification with surfactants. The study investigates the use of two surfactants, namely sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), to eliminate non-specific adsorption in MIPs. The binding isotherms of the target molecule sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on MIPs and non-imprinted polymers (NIPs) were analyzed, showing higher adsorption capacity of MIPs due to the specific cavities. The modification with SDS or CTAB effectively eliminated non-specific adsorption in MIPs. The kinetic adsorption behavior further demonstrated the efficacy of MIP^+--SDS/CTAB in the selective adsorption of SMX. Calibration curves showcase the methodology's analytical capabilities, achieving low limit of detection for SMX 6 ng mL^-1 using MIP ⁺-SDS. The stability study confirmed that the developed MIP ⁺^/^--SDS/CTAB remains stable even at high temperatures, demonstrating its suitability for on-site applications. The methodology was successfully applied to detect SMX in milk and water samples, achieving promising recoveries. Overall, the electrostatic modification of MIPs with surfactants emerges as a valuable strategy for enhancing selectivity and performance in target molecule recognition and detection.

Direct formation of sulfuric acid in the atmosphere

In the atmosphere, gaseous sulfuric acid can form particles that influence the physical properties of clouds. Thus, the formation of sulfuric acid in the gas phase directly affects the radiative forcing and Earth's climate. In addition to the known formation from sulfur dioxide, researchers have now been able to demonstrate through experiments that there is another formation pathway that has been speculated about for decades. Sulfuric acid in the atmosphere can also be formed directly by the oxidation of organic sulfur compounds. This new production pathway can be responsible for up to half of the gaseous sulfuric acid formation over the oceans and is thus of high importance for climate projections -- especially over the oceans of the Southern Hemisphere. In the atmosphere, gaseous sulfuric acid can form particles that influence the physical properties of clouds. In addition to the known formation from sulfur dioxide, researchers at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) have now been able to demonstrate through experiments that there is another formation pathway that has been speculated about for decades. Sulfuric acid in the atmosphere can also be formed directly by the oxidation of organic sulfur compounds. This new production pathway can be responsible for up to half of the gaseous sulfuric acid formation over the oceans and is thus of high importance for climate projections -- especially over the oceans of the Southern Hemisphere, as the researchers write in the journal Nature Communications. Organic sulfur compounds are mainly emitted from biogenic sources and contribute significantly to Earth's sulfur cycle. The sulfur cycle is important for Earth's climate because the oxidation products of organic sulfur compounds, such as sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and methanesulfonic acid (MSA, CH3SO3H), initiate new particle formation. Sulfate particles scatter incoming solar radiation efficiently and affect the formation of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN). Number and size of CCN significantly change the microphysical and radiative properties as well as the lifetime of clouds. Hence, knowledge of how H2SO4 is formed in the atmosphere is mandatory to understand fundamental processes in the climate system. On global scale, with an annual emission rate of about 30 million tons of sulfur, the most important organic sulfur compound is dimethyl sulfide (DMS, CH3SCH3) followed by methyl mercaptan (MeSH, CH3SH) and, to a lesser extent, dimethyl disulfide (DMDS, CH3SSCH3). Numerous laboratory experiments and model simulations were performed at TROPOS to investigate the atmospheric oxidation pathways of these compounds. "To our knowledge, there is so far no experimental evidence for the direct formation of H2SO4 in the gas phase, except via SO2 oxidation by OH radicals or Criegee intermediates, although this has long been speculated about in the literature and even such pathways are implemented in models," explains Dr. Torsten Berndt of TROPOS. At TROPOS, experimental proof of direct H2SO4 formation has now been achieved, using two flow systems: a horizontal free-jet flow system and a vertical laminar flow tube. With these systems, it was possible to work under different reaction conditions, which allowed an exact investigation of the oxidation processes by using advanced mass spectrometric techniques. In addition, the experimental findings allow the estimation of many kinetic parameters in the sulfur oxidation cycle and thus contribute to an improved understanding of its atmospheric oxidation. The experimental results were integrated into the complex multiphase chemistry mechanism MCM/CAPRAM existing at TROPOS for model evaluation. "Under the relatively pristine conditions over the Southern oceans, the direct formation of H2SO4 can contribute up to 50% to the total gas phase formation," report Dr. Andreas Tilgner and Dr. Erik H. Hoffmann. It is postulated that the direct gas-phase formation may be especially important over oceans in the Southern Hemisphere. These regions are often characterized by small SO2-to-DMS ratios, which means that the fraction of this direct production pathway can be important there. Other atmospheric regions, where small SO2-to-DMS ratios are expected, are in the outflow regimes of marine clouds. There, high H2SO4 concentrations and the formation of new aerosol particles have been already observed, which can now be explained.

FDA Approves Sebela Pharmaceuticals' SUFLAVE™ A New Colonoscopy Preparation that Tastes Similar to a Sports Drink

SUFLAVE™ offers the same efficacy as SUPREP® Bowel Prep Kit BRAINTREE, Mass., June 22, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- Sebela Pharmaceuticals today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted approval of SUFLAVE™ (polyethylene glycol, sodium sulfate, potassium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and sodium chloride for oral solution), for colonoscopy preparation in adults. SUFLAVE, a low-volume, safe and effective colonoscopy preparation – with a taste similar to a lemon-lime sports drink – was developed and will be marketed by Braintree Laboratories, a leader in gastroenterology and part of Sebela Pharmaceuticals.
