Biodegradation of polypropylene by Bacillus cereus PP-5 isolated from waste landfill

Waste polypropylene (PP) plastic has caused serious environmental pollution, and biological methods provide a feasible strategy to deal with the environmental pollution and resource waste caused by waste plastics. In this study, we investigated the physicochemical and structural changes of PP plastic degraded by Bacillus cereus PP-5, which was isolated from a waste landfill. After 30-day incubation with PP-5, structural properties of PP powder were analyzed using high-temperature gel permeation chromatography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. We found that PP-5 colonized the plastic surface through biofilm, and the bio-deterioration with visible cracks was also observed from the PP surfaces, the carbonyl index of PP-5-treated PP powder was identified as 0.536. Meantime, the weight-average molecular weight and thermal stability of PP decreased, while melting enthalpy and average crystallinity increased after PP-5treatment. Moreover, oxidative cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds of PP was observed from the appearance of quaternary carbon and elevated CO groups of PP-5-treated PP plastics, suggesting microbial oxidation. Our findings elucidate a potential bio-oxidizing mechanism for microbial-driven PP degradation, and also highlight the application prospects in bio-recycling systems, particularly for managing plastic waste in landfills or marine environments.

Discrimination of Perfluorinated Arenes/Alkanes by Modulable Polyaromatic Capsules

Efficient and selective binding of perfluorocarbons (PFCs), comprising only fluorine and carbon atoms, unlike hydrocarbons, remains quite difficult owing to the repulsive nature of fluorine. Here we describe that a cavity modulation strategy enables metal-linked polyaromatic capsules to quantitatively bind PFCs with excellent selectivity. From a mixture of perfluoroarene and the corresponding perfluoroalkane (i.e., perfluoronaphthalene and perfluorodecalin), a Pt(II)-linked capsule exclusively binds the arenes in water at room temperature, via effective D-A-A-D π-stacking interactions. The size-selective binding toward perfluoroarenes (i.e., perfluoronaphthalene and perfluorobenzene) is improved by using the analogous N-doped capsule from 85% to quantitative selectivity. Furthermore, unlike the Pt(II)-capsule, an isostructural Pd(II)-linked capsule displays the unusual length/shape-selective binding of linear/cyclic perfluoroalkanes (i.e., perfluoroheptane and perfluorodecalin) under similar conditions. Recognition of substituted hydrogen atoms on perfluorobiphenyl can also be accomplished using the Pt(II)-capsule. Various PFCs are thus clearly distinguished for the first time by the modulable polyaromatic capsules under ambient aqueous conditions.

Insulative Compression of Neuronal Tissues on Microelectrode Arrays by Perfluorodecalin Enhances Electrophysiological Measurements

AbstractMicroelectrode array (MEA) techniques provide a powerful method for exploration of neural network dynamics. A critical challenge is to interface 3D neural tissues including neural organoids with the flat MEAs surface, as it is essential to place neurons near to the electrodes for recording weak extracellular signals of neurons. To enhance performance of MEAs, most research have focused on improving their surface treatment, while little attention has been given to improve the tissue‐MEA interactions from the medium side. Here, a strategy is introduced to augment MEA measurements by overlaying perfluorodecalin (PFD), a biocompatible fluorinated solvent, over neural tissues. Laying PFD over cerebral organoids insulates and compresses the tissues on MEA, which significantly enhances electrophysiological recordings. Even subtle signals such as the propagation of action potentials in bundled axons of motor nerve organoids can be detected with the technique. Moreover, PFD stabilizes tissues in acute recordings and its transparency allows optogenetic manipulations. This research highlights the potential of PFD as a tool for refining electrophysiological measurements of in vitro neuronal cultures. This can open new avenues to leverage precision of neuroscientific investigations and expanding the toolkit for in vitro studies of neural function and connectivity.
