Panthenol and jojoba oil are well-known active cosmetic skin care ingredients. Both are known to improve skin moisture. While panthenol is a water soluble mol., jojoba oil, as a very lipophilic substance, acts as an emollient and protects the skin from excessive water evaporationPanthenol has also shown that it can calm irritated skin.We assumed that a combination of both active ingredients in a suitable spray formulation would provide advanced skin care. With the resulting formula, we performed a controlled clin. study to prove the moisturization effect and also to assess the reduction of dryness-related skin roughness. In a study over 2 wk on 22 female volunteers, we performed skin capacitance measurements to assess moisturization and we measured skin-smoothing properties by three dimensional profilometry (PRIMOS).Both in vivo methods are non-invasive and well established in scientific efficacy-testing of cosmetic products. As a result of this study, it was proven that the panthenol jojoba spray formulation led to significantly increased skin moisture (p < 0.05) compared to an untreated control area and compared to baseline (p < 0.001).A significant skin-smoothing effect was also seen after 2 wk of application compared to baseline (p < 0.001 for Ra, p < 0.025 for Rz) and a difference on probable level (p < 0.1) in favor for the test product when compared to the untreated control area.
