Singapore, 25 May 2024 – In a First-In-Singapore collaboration, leading RNA technology company Mirxes and PULSE TCM, a renowned provider of traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) services, today launched the holistic “East Meets West” Community Health Screening Pilot at Bukit Gombak. Witnessed by Ms Low Yen Ling, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, Ministry of Trade and Industry, Mayor of South West District and Grassroots Adviser to Bukit Gombak Grassroots Organisations, this pilot represents a novel approach towards integrating contemporary Western precision diagnostic technology with Eastern TCM wisdom, aimed at creating an integrated approach to preventive and personalised healthcare for a Healthier Singapore.
Complementary Western and Eastern Medicines in disease early detection and prevention
2. In Singapore, cancer and chronic diseases like cardiovascular and metabolic conditions are major contributors of healthcare burden. These diseases share common risk factors stemming from lifestyle and environment. Factors like aging, smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, and infections all contribute to cellular and molecular changes that drive the development and progression of these diseases.
3. Contemporary Western precision diagnostic technologies, such as Mirxes’ GASTROClear blood test, leverage advanced molecular detection to identify abnormalities in RNA and DNA. This allows for early disease detection, often before symptoms arise. Early and precise diagnosis enables timely interventions, and potentially improved patient outcomes and significant cost savings.
4. The Eastern TCM concept of “治未病”, which translates to “treating before illness arises”, takes prevention a step further by intervening before complex diseases like cancer develop. TCM also uses the concept of “body constitution”, which refers to a person’s inherent physical and physiological tendencies, to personalise risk assessment and prevention. TCM practitioners consider body constitution when diagnosing and treating patients, tailoring approaches based on an individual’s unique balance of Yin, Yang, Qi (Energy), and Blood. By understanding one’s body constitution, TCM can promote overall health, prevent disease, and develop personalised treatment plans.
Bridging Western and Eastern Medical Paradigms
5. This collaboration is committed to bridging Eastern and Western medical paradigms, leveraging the best of both. It also marks a new frontier for preventive health screening in Singapore, by facilitating an earlier and better understanding of individual health profiles. TCM empowers individuals to gain early insights into their body constitution, encouraging proactive measures to maintain health and potentially prevent certain diseases and cancers. Western precision diagnostics complements this by detecting complex and serious diseases early before symptom occurs. Through this pilot, Mirxes and PULSE TCM hope to synergise the best of two worlds and explore the potential of a joint study to evaluate and establish the effectiveness of a combined “East meets West” health management programme.
6. “We are thrilled to introduce this innovative collaboration that brings together the best of Western and Eastern medicines,” said Dr Zhou Lihan, Co-Founder and CEO of Mirxes. “At Mirxes, our mission of making healthcare affordable and accessible extends beyond innovation. It also encompasses tailoring healthcare solutions to the unique needs of our customers. By integrating TCM principles alongside our advanced RNA technology, we aspire to provide a more holistic approach to disease early detection and prevention, empowering individuals to take proactive steps towards their well-being.”
7. “We are excited to join forces with Mirxes in this groundbreaking collaboration that bridges the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine with contemporary healthcare technology,” said Mr Nicholas Poh, Founder of PULSE TCM. “At PULSE TCM, we believe in the power of integrating TCM practices into Western medicine, and this partnership exemplifies our commitment.”
8. “East Meets West” Community Health Screening Pilot was held as part of the Bukit Gombak Cares initiative, a constituency wide initiative that focuses on addressing the needs of the residents, from elevating the impact of rising cost of living to improving health and wellness through programmes and activities. The 30 selected residents received a complimentary comprehensive health assessment, undergoing both “western” precision health screening and personalised TCM consultation. TCM physicians also delved into their unique health needs, offering tailored recommendations that include herbal prescriptions and acupoint therapies.
