The goal of this clinical trial is to understand if people recovering from anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) surgery will complete mental imagery training and if this will improve their injured leg's strength. The main questions are:
* Will people complete a five-day mental imagery exercise schedule while in physical therapy for ACLR?
* Does mental imagery exercise help raise leg strength during ACLR recovery? Researchers will also compare if different mental imagery exercises involving leg extension or squats will change leg strength.
Participants will be asked to:
* Participate in two testing sessions to make measurements of leg function
* Complete about 10 minutes of mental imagery exercises once per day for five days at home and write down whether they complete the exercises.

The main purpose of the study is to measure and localize immediate post extraction changes i.e. socket expansion versus no width change along the socket wall and identify whether the immediate post-extraction ridge width condition (expansion or no change) is a determinant of buccolingual ridge width and height changes 4 months following extraction and ridge preservation.

Computer-guided Action Planning to Support Physical Activity (CAPPA) for Employees with Chronic Knee Symptoms

The goal of this clinical trial is to learn if a brief health coaching intervention based on an approach known as brief action planning + Fitbit can increase physical activity in employees with chronic knee symptoms who work for Advocate Aurora Health. The main questions it aims to answer are:
* Will a greater proportion of people in the health coaching intervention increase physical activity to at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week than a group of people with an attention-control intervention (Fitbit+health education coaching)?
* Can we predict who will not increase physical activity levels to at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week by the end of the study (3 and 6 months) based upon Fitbit data captured over the first four weeks?
Researchers will compare a health education coaching intervention + Fitbit to see if providing a Fitbit + attention control will increase physical activity to at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week among members of the attention-control group.
Participants will engage in
* Online study orientation and question and answer session
* Three assessment sessions (baseline, 3 months, 6 months)
* A 12 week intervention with no less than four (4) and no more than twelve (12) health coaching sessions. Physical activity health coaching will make action plans for health coaching. Health education coaching will focus on educating participants on non-physical activity factors related to a comprehensive management of chronic knee symptoms, such as managing fatigue, sleep hygiene, mindfulness, etc.

The Board Committee Chair Effect: How Much Does It Contribute to Firm Performance?

Boards of directors rely on committees to perform important specialized monitoring and advising tasks. While there is general consensus that committees and their chairs influence board outcomes and, thus, firm performance, we know little about the magnitude of these effects on firm performance. Using variance decomposition, we show that audit, compensation, and nominating committee chairs explain a significant portion of variance in firm financial performance. Some of the performance variance attributed to committee chairs comes from the increased explanatory power of adding an important level of strategic leaders. However, most of the committee chair effect seems to stem from performance variance that prior research may have inaccurately attributed to firm executives and other influences. For example, our results show that committee chairs, collectively, have a stronger influence on firm performance than board chairs, illustrating a need for more research on the critical role committee chairs play in the functioning of committees, boards, and firms. Furthermore, in additional analyses, we find that committee chair effects can differ across board leadership structures and time periods.

COVID-19-Related Risk, Resilience, and Mental Health Among Mexican American Mothers Across the First Year of the Pandemic

AbstractBackgroundLatina mothers have been especially affected by the pandemic and historically exhibit high rates of depression and anxiety. However, few longitudinal studies have assessed the effect of the pandemic on this vulnerable population. We hypothesized that COVID-19-related stressors would associate with psychological distress among Latina mothers across the first year of the pandemic.MethodsWe investigated COVID-19-related impact, stigma, and fears across two critical time points and changes in these measures in relation to changes in maternal anxiety and depression among mothers of Mexican descent living in Southern California (n=152). Surveys were administered within 5–16 weeks of the March 19, 2020 stay-at-home COVID-19 order in California and again between June to December 2021.ResultsHigh proportions of women reported moderate to severe impacts of COVID-19 early in the pandemic, which reduced modestly a year later, e.g., reduced family incomes (55.9% 2020 Lockdown vs 32.7% 1-year follow-up). Anticipatory stigma was high across the first year, e.g., worrying at least some of the time that a family member will be deported (33.1% 2020 Lockdown vs. 14.1% 1-year follow-up), or they would not be able to care for their children (88.5% 2020 lockdown vs 82.2% 1-year follow-up). COVID-19 stigma, impact, and fears were significantly associated with higher levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms at both time points (p<0.003), and changes in COVID-19 impact were associated with changes in depression (p=0.0004).ConclusionFindings emphasize the adverse socioeconomic and psychological effects of the pandemic for Latina mothers.

Lack of Women Researchers Could Mean Fewer Female Study Participants

MONDAY, April 24, 2023 -- When exercise studies are led by men, female participants are often in short supply. While this underrepresentation of female research subjects has been documented in everything from clinical trials to cell cultures, a new study links researchers' gender and women’s participation. “Our findings provide direct evidence of the link between gender of authors and gender of research participants,” said lead study author Jessica Linde , a doctoral candidate at Marquette University in Milwaukee. Having too few women participating results in gaps in understanding how certain interventions work in females. For this study, researchers analyzed 971 original research articles in three major journals that focus on exercise physiology, zeroing in on studies published in 1991 and in 2021. They found that in 1991, 51% of the papers were written by all-male teams. That was also true of about 18% of papers in 2021. All female-research teams also declined over the period, from 1.8% in 1991 to 1.1% in 2021. While the number of women participating in exercise studies rose over the years, they represented just one-third of study participants in 2021. The number of female participants was lower in both years when the study leader (or last author) was a man. In 2021, Linde said, when studies were led by a woman, they included equal numbers of men and women as participants. More women in other leadership roles such as editorial board members also correlated to greater gender parity of research subjects, the study found. The findings were presented this week at a meeting of the American Physiological Society, in Long Beach, Calif. “The low representation of women as participants in exercise science and physiology research could be resolved by encouraging authors who are men to research equitable numbers of each gender,” the authors said in a meeting news release. Research presented at medical meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.
